On his first day as PM, Andy Burnham promised to end rough sleeping by Christmas. @hannahfearn.bsky.social asks whether what worked in Manchester can really work across the country, and what it will take to get there.

Can Andy Burnham really end rough sleeping by Christmas?
Manchester shows Housing First can work, but scaling it nationally is another matter.

Women didn't get much of a mention in Andy Burnham's powerful conference speech, but his promise of a national social care service, free at the point of use and available in every home, is one of the most feminist policies I've seen. Thread... 👇

Good to know that Gemini currently can't tell the difference between the prime minster and Michael McIntyre. Not sure the big AI revolution is going to lead to growth in all postcodes if we're relying on identifying individuals only by a pair of spectacles.

What’s remarkable is how so much of the coverage of Burnham’s speech today is focused on 2 policy areas: social care and pensioner income. What Burnham set out was far bigger than the policy commitments he made. It was a huge political realignment. Do we not have the capacity to engage with that?

I’ve not been much of a critic of the BBC over the years. I’m a daily user of multiple services and it has huge social, and also personal, value for me. I have no problem with the licence fee. I have just watched back Burnham’s speech. The post speech coverage was woeful.

We can all argue about Burnham's speech but it meant girl twin asking me what the triple lock was and boy twin asking me what my preferred form of PR is. So it's done its work.

Andy Burnham is heading to his party conference this weekend after an easy few months - he’s had a lot of luck in his first chapter as PM. If he wants to consolidate that lucky start he needs to sow the seeds if a general election win in this first leader’s speech. What issues need to be in there?

I grew up in Oxfordshire. Very occasionally I wonder if I ought to think about getting out of London again. I would like to thank the people of Piddington for reminding me why that is a truly awful idea. And also making a good case for abolishing parish councils/local gov overhaul.

No doubt this is going to irritate some, but I think Burnham is right to skip the assisted dying vote. It's a matter of conscience and not party political, but if he did participate the coverage of the PM's views would hijack the debate and distract from all the other crucial work he's doing.

I’ve just seen someone roll a cigarette on the tube, carefully leaning on a book and compressing it together into a tight tube. I know smoking is awful, I haven’t had one in 14 years and I probably won’t again, but there was also something so meditative about watching it. Retro. Calming.
