Knobs and buttons are much more accommodating for the visually impaired, families, and people like me who don’t conduct enough electricity for many touchscreens to register my touch. My microwave basically had four numbers I could use. The rest don’t respond to me.

Let books be. Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar? Find ways to get involved and spread the word: bit.ly/4yvixbB.
LET BOOKS BE. Various line drawings related to libraries and books, including a hand holding a sign made of an open book that reads "Freed for ALL to Read," a tote bag that reads "Totes Resist" carrying a book, a full book cart with the head and tale of a horse with text that reads "A Wild Ride," and a closeup of two feet standing on a stack of books that say "A Soap Box" on their spines. Text at bottom reads "Protect the freedom to read. Banned Books Week, October 4-10, 2026." American Library Association. ala.org/bbooks

One of my favourite little fall migrants - American Pipit. I love finding these little guys bobbing along the shoreline of roadsides as they stop on their way south. #birds
An American pipit perched a rock along a rocky shore. It's a little grey-brown bird with a white breast and brownish wing and tail. An American pipit perched amid pale grey pebbles looking straight at the camera, showing up its pale streaky breast.

Per @robcrank68.bsky.social for @alan6789.bsky.social , today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BlackAndRed (maybe a touch of white tossed in 😁) A Nuttal’s woodpecker looking for snacks in a palm trunk. #birds #BackyardBirds
A chubby black and white woodpecker has a red cap on its head that reaches down to the back of its neck. The bird is vertical as it perches on the trunk of a palm tree.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: A federal judge just HALTED the destruction of Big Bend. This is a massive victory for the landowners, local communities, and everyday Texans who stood up to protect one of our state's greatest treasures. The fight isn't over, but today, the people won.
Graphic from the Center for Biological Diversity over a scenic view of Big Bend. Large text reads, “MASSIVE WIN FOR BIG BEND.” Below, it says a federal judge has frozen all destruction throughout the Big Bend region until the project’s legality can be determined in court. The graphic adds that the Center will continue fighting to save Big Bend and asks supporters to join them.

15 minutes later BT shows up for snacks, right away up on the snack table. 5 minutes later, they both meet up in the south corner of the backyard for a photo op 😊 Junior leaves first, a few minutes later BT heads out of the yard, they both have roadrunner things to do apparently.
A second roadrunner comes into the yard and jumps up on the small table that has a ceramic bowl with mealworms in it. Two young roadrunners are standing in the shade of a small juniper in the corner of a backyard they both had some mealworms, one got a drink of water.

The children‘s section was the most used section of the library and a good amount of the books I scanned and reshelved were for readers 4-15 years old. Books are one of the few things that hold the attention of both toddlers and tweens. I still fondly remember series I delved into as a kid.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
