Reminds me of an episode of TNG that opens with Data reciting a play in "realistic" lighting and it's so dark you almost can't see him from the fire light and Picard has to explain that the audience needs to be able to SEE the play.

Minor crash out over dorks who fail media literacy so badly they can't even accept the very basic concept that the person writing the thing sets the genre they're writing in and the reader is the one who uses that to both understand the work more deeply *and* see how well that genre was executed.
One of those discussions I hate having with people is about if Warhammer 40k is satire. Because it doesn't matter how much evidence that they write satirical things or that they even state outright they write satire people will refuse to listen.

So here's my take so I can vent it out of my system: 40k is satire but any criticism being made in the text, (such as the Imperium regularly causes all its own problems, or that governments that hide information from their citizens are only making their citizens more vulnerable to those threats, or that consolidating all the power under a single figure is a bad idea but it's also bad to intentionally create a government that forces constant infighting just to agree what day of the week it is, etc., etc.) gets drowned out under marketing pushes to sell more toys and bolter slop by authors who never got the memo.

It's satire but it's satire being undercut by its own success and the number of cooks being allowed to season the pot.

And I know it's still satire because every now and then you find a juicy bit still floating in the broth that hasn't gotten strained out by someone else that shows there is still something to chew on in there. Such as when they released 10th edition with a clear parallel to Covid denial done through the lens of giant space bugs just to make the active denial more ridiculous and apparently wrong. Seriously the War of the Closed Eyes shows someone in the studio still has it, even if they don't always release bangers like that.Do I wish they would do better? Sure. But I also remember when the only lore we really got was bolter slop that was just mashing dolls together for like three hundred pages while making explosion noises and saying that Space Marines are super duper good guys with no hint of irony. Oh and whatever space elf snuff crap CS Goto managed to get published.

But since Roundtree came in as CEO there has been a shift in the novels at least and we're getting more stories with shades of grey and the Imperium clearly being shown to be making their problems worse because their egos and bigotry gets in the way. And that's perfect. We need a lot more of that and not just in the novels where the average person won't see them but also in the codexes, in the very rules descriptions and in any shows or marketing articles we get as well.

It's not enough to let the Imperium lose now and then. They need to actively make their own problems worse at every opportunity and continue to torpedo the "Great Man Theory" by showing that not even demi-gods can fix that mess on their own and only through a species wide collective effort will humanity ever actually save itself.

Wrote about the Masculinity Scam, or how selling reactionary ideas about what makes a man helps a small number of bad people profit and makes everyone else (including men) miserable www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Over the past 10 years, the misogyny of the manosphere has become more open and strident, but the big innovation seems to have been combining that conspiratorial misogyny with earnest self-help advice. Heartbreak and rejection leave people emotionally vulnerable, and the manosphere pitch often comes paired with benign advice about standing up for yourself, being mentally tough, or becoming physically active. But getting yourself together with the expectation that soon everyone you meet will be forced to respect you inevitably leads to disappointment.

When that disappointment sets in, the manosphere has an explanation: Can’t find a girlfriend? It’s because women who make their own living can no longer be forced into marrying guys they don’t like. Can’t find a job? It’s because undeserving women and minorities are being picked instead of you, even though you’re better. Feel bad about yourself? It’s because our feminized society deprived you of a life of meaningful toil, military adventure, and elevated social status. It is a bleak view of the world, a kind of male doomerism in which a meaningful life can be found only in the domination and exploitation of others.

"If you were to commit a murder, how would you do it?"
"It's got to be big! No slipping something into someone's drink, that's just pathetic. I'd use a steamroller, just leave a stain on the road. There's probably a couple of people I'd put under a steamroller, but I won't say who they are; otherwise, when they see a steamroller coming their way they'll be on full alert. And steamrollers don't go very fast..."

As promised to link to my first actual Hookland book. It is only small, but covers a lot of the ghost soil. If enough of you buy it and like it there will be a Volume Two. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1068598123 It will also be available in an actual bookshop soon.
The coverplate of the book HOOKLAND FRAGMENTS VOLUME ONE by David Southwell featuring a picture of the Ghost Bear of Hookland by Maria Strutz and the following blurb:

I firmly believe David Southwell’s Hookland to be one of the great
imaginative achievements of our age. One that will one day be
spoken of the way Lovecraft’s Mythos is now. Hookland is the
folklore of the county that exists on the edge of our vision, an
unseen but sensed Britain that is at once familiar and strange.
It is the land just to the left of where we live. David’s work is
made even more remarkable by his open invitation for all to
come and play there. Though of course visitors to Hookland
must be wary, the county exacts its price from us all. – R.J.
Barker, award-winning author of bestsellers such as The Bone
Ships and Gods of Wyrdwood.

As a visitor I am more frequently in Hookland than the barrows
and chalk downs of my childhood. – Roger Clarke, best-selling
author of A Natural History of Ghosts.

Hookland is gold standard eldritch world building. – Ian
Simmons, Fortean Times news editor.

This a shimmering place of deep time, cold wars, old gods and
ever renewing mysteries. The heartland and home county of the
restless and the outsider, a lamp glow to welcome the lost, a
pole star for those who dare to step into the dark and follow its
glorious glowing ghostlight. – Rose Ruane. Artist and writer of
Birding and This Is Yesterday.

Hookland has been called many things. Psychic shrapnel
embedded in place. A re-wilding of folklore. The English Eerie
told in strange fragments. According to its creator David
Southwell, nothing in Hookland is made up, just remembered
differently.

Hookland Fragments Volume One offers both an introduction to
Hookland and an exploration of its agenda of re-enchantment
as resistance.

TV writers were right in 2023 and are being proven more right every day — there was a stable television model that made everyone lots of money and put out good shows. Then execs with no understanding of the industry confused the production model and the distribution model, and they blew it all up.
