Sat for a coffee at Elm Row and counted the traffic for 15 minutes: 343 pedestrians 52 cyclists 2 cars Remind me why we’ve turned this public square into a car park? This is probably the best connected retail location in Scotland - trams, buses, walkable, busy cycle lane. Why ruin it?

Burnham knew this would be the result of dropping his pledge to cap political donations, but he did it anyway. Labour are determined to midwife a Reform government, like plenty of other centrist parties before them whose weakness paved the way for right wing extremists.

The idea that redesigning this leg of HS2 will save a penny rather than cost yet more billions is doolally - as is proposing building a high speed line in ballast in 2026 a week after two* trains derailed over heat-induced buckles.

Today, the DfT announced its marvellous, magical changes to HS2 to save costs. These changes are: ⭕ Reduce the maximum speed from 360 to 320 km/h 🤖 Remove Automatic Train Operation (ATO) 🚦 Reduce the signalling system (ETCS) specification This will save 2% off HS2's capex. Good idea?
Proposed Changes
7. The assessment proposes the following package of changes:
a. Reduce the maximum line speed from 360kph to 320 kph. 360kph is faster than any
current railway globally. 320kph represents a standard ‘new build’ maximum operating
speed in Europe.
b. Remove Automatic Train Operation (ATO) – ATO would be a global first-of-a-kind train
control and signalling system for a high-speed railway, introducing novelty that would
require extensive proving. No other European railways are actively pursuing ATO for their
high-speed lines and it is not needed to deliver the requirement of 10 trains per hour
(tph). c. Reduce the signalling system (ETCS) specification – Without the requirement for ATO
it is possible to adopt a proven ETCS version (v2.1) to align with other UK and European
projects, including the live delivery programmes; Transpennine Route Upgrade and East
Coast Digital Project.
8. These three elements of the current HS2 specification drive significant cost, time and risk
into the HS2 programme. Given the advanced nature of the design and build of the civils
programme between Birmingham and London HS2 programme it will continue to be built.
The changes outlined here reflect the biggest opportunities to reduce complexity and
improve confidence in delivering HS2. If these changes are not implemented, proving the
railway operation at 360kph could take significant time and money and potentially result in
a later decision to change the scope.

Plan for new 'Potholes Fund' using money intended for active travel would be 'a disaster' say campaigners
By Ian Swanson

Published 18th Mar 2026, 11:52 GMTPothole photo + text..

Plans by Labour for a new “Potholes Fund” using money previously allocated for active travel have been branded “a disaster” by campaigners.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar pledged last week to establish a new Scotland-wide road repair fund worth £350 million over the next five years, estimated to be enough to fix nearly five million more potholes.

He said under the SNP spending on local roads spending had plummeted by 13 per cent since 2010-11 as a result of cuts to council budgets.

The proposed Potholes Fund would be financed by diverting £70m a year from the active and sustainable travel budget

But Mr Sarwar’s plan involves repurposing £70 million each year from the active and sustainable travel budget, though he said he would protect funds for bus infrastructure investment.

And now cycle campaign group Spokes is urging him to rethink his “absolutely disastrous” proposal.A spokesperson said: “If Labour includes in its manifesto this proposal to slash active travel investment by almost 50 per cent it will be a disaster not just in terms of healthy lifestyles, climate, toxic pollution and congestion, but also electorally for Labour itself in those urban seats where it is now threatened by the Greens or other parties.

“Recent data from Cycling Scotland shows the huge success in Edinburgh, Glasgow and elsewhere of active travel investment, with rapid and major rises in bike use.

“The cost-benefit ratio for such schemes far exceeds that for road expansion, where funding, nonetheless, is growing.

“Potholes are indeed a major danger for all road users, but they are caused by heavy vehicles, including the rising numbers of large SUVs, not by cyclists.

“There is no rationale whatsoever in using the active travel budget for this purpose, rather than from the vehicles causing the potholes.

“We cannot believe Anas Sarwar has consulted properly with his own transport-specialist colleagues such as Edinburgh's transport convener, Stephen Jenkinson, who understand the essential value of active travel investment. Nor can he have looked at Labour's proud history on active travel funding, notably Sarah Boyack MSP's introduction of Scotland's first major initiative on cycling investment, the Cycling, Walking, Safer Streets fund.

“We urge Anas Sarwar to think again before this absolutely disastrous proposal makes it into his manifesto.”
