You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

Sat for a coffee at Elm Row and counted the traffic for 15 minutes: 343 pedestrians 52 cyclists 2 cars Remind me why we’ve turned this public square into a car park? This is probably the best connected retail location in Scotland - trams, buses, walkable, busy cycle lane. Why ruin it?

We could, but on the other hand opinion polls show people wouldn't like that, so it seems we are out of options unfortunately

Burnham knew this would be the result of dropping his pledge to cap political donations, but he did it anyway. Labour are determined to midwife a Reform government, like plenty of other centrist parties before them whose weakness paved the way for right wing extremists.

Siemens/ICE trains are so good, too bad DB's network is such a disaster... The dream route for folks like me who suffer from motion sickness is Mannheim/Stuttgart <-> Paris. ICE trains on LGV East line, pushing 310 Km/h, and you can barely tell it's moving at all. Chef's kiss.

The idea that redesigning this leg of HS2 will save a penny rather than cost yet more billions is doolally - as is proposing building a high speed line in ballast in 2026 a week after two* trains derailed over heat-induced buckles.

Yeah, the problem with Princes Street right now is definitely not the transport chaos you have created, but someone else's lack of tweets, THAT's what really matters. Keep whinging on social media instead of doing your job, I'm sure that will help yours and labour's chances in next year's elections

Today, the DfT announced its marvellous, magical changes to HS2 to save costs. These changes are: ⭕ Reduce the maximum speed from 360 to 320 km/h 🤖 Remove Automatic Train Operation (ATO) 🚦 Reduce the signalling system (ETCS) specification This will save 2% off HS2's capex. Good idea?
Proposed Changes
7. The assessment proposes the following package of changes:
a. Reduce the maximum line speed from 360kph to 320 kph. 360kph is faster than any
current railway globally. 320kph represents a standard ‘new build’ maximum operating
speed in Europe.
b. Remove Automatic Train Operation (ATO) – ATO would be a global first-of-a-kind train
control and signalling system for a high-speed railway, introducing novelty that would
require extensive proving. No other European railways are actively pursuing ATO for their
high-speed lines and it is not needed to deliver the requirement of 10 trains per hour
(tph). c. Reduce the signalling system (ETCS) specification – Without the requirement for ATO
it is possible to adopt a proven ETCS version (v2.1) to align with other UK and European
projects, including the live delivery programmes; Transpennine Route Upgrade and East
Coast Digital Project.
8. These three elements of the current HS2 specification drive significant cost, time and risk
into the HS2 programme. Given the advanced nature of the design and build of the civils
programme between Birmingham and London HS2 programme it will continue to be built.
The changes outlined here reflect the biggest opportunities to reduce complexity and
improve confidence in delivering HS2. If these changes are not implemented, proving the
railway operation at 360kph could take significant time and money and potentially result in
a later decision to change the scope.

Greens lost last seat in region by 434 votes, IGV spoiler party got 2490 votes, so 1 in 5 of those votes going to the Greens would have meant winning it. So far it looks like IGV costed the Greens at least 3 seats, if my calculations are correct docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Thank you. Same story in NE Scotland region, if my math is right, margin for last seat was 529 in favour of the Tories, runner up Greens, IGV got 2354, so if even one in five voter was mistaken that's another MSP that the Greens lost due to the spoiler party. Would have made the Greens joint 2nd

@dhothersall.bsky.social these are my calculations and think they are correct. The tories won the last seat in Mid Scotland and Fife by 434 votes, or a swing of 217. IGV got 2490 votes, more than ten times that. So even if only one in ten IGV votes were given by mistake, it costs the Greens one MSP.

Not even half. These are the calculations, SGP lost the last seat to the Tories by 434 votes, or a 217 swing. IGV got 2490 votes, so if even less than 10% of IGV voters actually inteded to vote Greens, they lost a seat because of this spoiler party. The @electoralcommission.org.uk has lots to answer

Looks like so far they managed to cost the SGP at least one seat, and half the regions have yet to declare. This is dereliction of duty from the electoral commission, plain and simple. Every member should get sacked and replaced.
