75% of the Louisiana families who lost SNAP after the enactment of the Republican reconciliation law were cut off for procedural reasons. Families are losing food assistance due to paperwork issues, not because they no longer meet eligibility requirements. veritenews.org/2026/10/07/f...
Many states, including Louisiana, have placed pressure on applicants to submit more information more often to verify their eligibility to reduce the state’s payment error rate and limit how much the cost of benefits shifts to the state.

“It’s been a race to drive down those error rates,” Llobrera said.

He said the challenge of implementing new program restrictions and requiring more documentation has increased the burden on applicants and state agencies. The agencies have to process more paperwork on a tight timeline without enough staff. This can increase the likelihood of errors when processing applications, potentially leading to rejection of benefits for more people. It’s also harder for applicants to meet additional verification requirements.

Correction: Scott Colom would be the first Black person *elected* to the Senate. The chamber's first-ever two Black members, Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce, served during Reconstruction before the direct election of senators.

It’s wild to me that it hasn’t triggered more of a “wait I thought more cops = less crime, less cops = more crime, but apparently it has nothing to do with the number of cops?” conversation nationally.

Look, this is bad. Yes. But the Trump admin sent six (6) people to Maricopa and Pima. Where, by my count, there are 404 polling places, spread across 18,000 square miles (each county is ~9k sq mi). What they want is the FEAR to discourage the voting they can't actually prevent.

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

India is one of the major cases of democratic backsliding. The Modi government is abusing state power to give itself advantages in elections, purging voter rolls—with a flimsy pretext—in ways that target Indians Modi doesn’t like, in particular Muslims, the minority he’s been violently repressing.

Netanyahu has been re-elected multiple times. Brexit was a national referendum. AfD’s recent gains came in a free and fair vote. National Front/Rally gets its support freely too. Putin rigged the system, but independent measures have consistently shown him popular. Many want this stuff.

Honestly, i think most democracies have been in an anti-incumbency wave since the pandemic. It explains Lula's election, as well as Biden, Trump, and what seems to be a blue wave midterms.

Missing from this AI debate is that the arts are essential to humans through production as well as consumption. Making art changes minds, bodies, and relationships. Artmaking is a transformative act that changes the artmakers in important ways that ripple out, changing human society as a whole.

Putin apologists of the right (eg Tucker Carlson) and left (eg Noam Chomsky) got what they wanted: a U.S. government that treats the war as not Russia’s fault, cuts military support for Ukraine, and pressures Ukraine to give up land in exchange for the Kremlin’s word. It has not resulted in peace.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
