Something I didn't appreciate about the Maryland Renaissance Faire until today is that they've been running a 30+ year real time performance of the life and wives of Henry VIII. They started with 1509 and every year the Faire bumps up another year.

Not sure if this is a commentary on Agnes Callard, or Twitter
n case any of you follow me on Twitter and wonder why I haven’t posted there in a long time, the reason is that my account was hacked back in September and I reported this to Twitter, but it turns out the hacker was better at impersonating me than I am and they convinced Twitter that they were the real me and thus I can’t access that account ever again.

You couldn't make Blazing Saddles today. You'd have to call it Blazing Samurai and then make it an animated kids movie and turn everyone into cats and dogs and cast Michael Cera as Bart and 12 years of hell later have a film so bad Mel will only let you release it as Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank

Reading about a painter called "The sodomite" who did a painting called "St Benedict repairs a Broken Colander through Prayer" where the saint is a side character because the actual focus of the fresco is a self portrait with a pet badger Iconic tbh en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Sodoma

Dolly Parton took herself seriously in all the ways that mattered, and none of the ways that didn't. Her deeds are worth emulating, but so is her attitude--she held that too-rare sense of perspective that let her respect *and* laugh at herself in equal measure.

Have to reshare this every time I see it. Raymond Chandler mocking science fiction in 1953 and sounding cool as hell. He should have written some space stories.
Did you ever read what they call Science Fiction? It’s a scream. It is written like this:

“I checked out with K19 on Aldabaran III, and stepped out through the crummalite hatch on my 22 Model Sirus Hardtop. I cocked the timejector in secondary and waded through the bright blue manda grass. My breath froze into pink pretzels. I flicked on the heat bars and the Brylls ran swiftly on five legs using their other two to send out crylon vibrations. The pressure was almost unbearable, but I caught the range on my wrist computer through the transparent cysicites. I pressed the trigger. The thin violet glow was icecold against the rust-colored mountains. The Brylls shrank to half an inch long and I worked fast stepping on them with the poltex. But it wasn’t enough. The sudden brightness swung me around and the Fourth Moon had already risen. I had exactly four seconds to hot up the disintegrator and Google⁵ had told me it wasn’t enough. He was right.”

They pay brisk money for this crap?

I'm once again asking scholars of Greco-Roman antiquity not to use "Ancient World" for book titles when what they really mean is ancient Greece and Rome... Fabian Horn's recent book (reviewed on BMCR today) looks like a fascinating collection of chapters looking at Conceptual Metaphor Theory, but...
Meme based on an old Facebook UI the text reads "Marked Safe From" and then I've inserted custom content that reads "A book on the Ancient World having any chapters outside of Greece and Rome".

let me add too that we were ostensibly closed because our major was "unsustainable," but the state's - and university's - own metrics showed that our enrollment has been growing consistently since 2012 this wasn't about money and it wasn't about metrics. it was about something else.

Btw did everyone already know that sign language can also exhibit metathesis?? 'cause nobody told me!!
Wikipedia screenshot

American Sign Language
In American Sign Language, several signs which have a pre-specified initial and final location in reference to the body of the person signing (such as the signs RESTAURANT, PARENT, or TWINS) can have the order of these two locations reversed in contexts which seem to be purely phonological. While not possible with all signs, this does happen with quite a few. For example, the sign DEAF, prototypically made with the "1" handshape making contact first with the cheek and then moving to contact the jaw (as in the sentence FATHER DEAF), can have these locations reversed if the preceding sign, when part of the same constituent, has a final location more proximal to the jaw (as in the sentence MOTHER DEAF). Both forms of the sign DEAF are acceptable to native signers.[4] A proposed prerequisite for metathesis to apply in ASL is that both signs must be within the same region on the body. Constraints on the applications of metathesis in ASL has led to discussions that the phonology breaks down the body into regions distinct from settings.[5]

Every recorded copy contains a series of varying hand-made corrections that seem to have been produced in the print shop itself. Often, these corrections are made using white paint to remove or alter notes. But notes are also scraped away, and or altered in pen, or simply reprinted. 5/8
An image of a reprinted red initial “D” ([D]um medium . . .) The previous large red initial had been printed in the wrong position and was corrected by painting over in white, which has since flaked away.

A section of black text accidentally printed over a red rubric. This also shows that the red and black portions of text were set and printed as separate units.
