It's only appropriate to bring iced coffee for an afternoon zoom interview (hot coffee for morning ones, obvs). For in person interviews, it's a sign of submissionto bring your own (& you don't want to start a job on that note). Ideally, place your coffee order with the interviewer when you arrive

There's a lot that's wrong with this but putting Game of Thrones, a show that shat the bed so badly at the end that no one can talk about it without mentioning how bad the last season was, that many spots above Deadwood has made me mad enough that I didn't even keep reading down the list

It’s important to be clear that the truth value of a subject does not become debatable just because somebody wants to debate. Ether. Wandering wombs. Devils in red heads, the cursed left handed. Flat earth. Phrenology. Humors. Race science. “Debate me bro!” It’s fine for the answer to be: no.

I'm just going to throw this out there, academic freedom isn't meant to protect things that have have been emperically disproved by a preponderance of actual evidence by actual scholars in the actual field. Would these people be equally mad if a flat earther were fired from a science department?
Abhishek Saha, professor of mathematics at Queen Mary University of London, who is among the signatories of the supportive letter, said those seeking Cofnas’ dismissal “misunderstands both philosophy and academic freedom” and that “academic freedom exists precisely to protect contentious, controversial and offensive work”. The American Association of Physical Anthropology in 2019 issued a statement rejecting “racial realism” as incompatible with the scientific evidence, while commentary published in the journal Philosophical Psychology described his work as belonging to “a group of ideas that insist on their legitimacy in spite of disproving empirical evidence”.

A lot of this is my own baggage, but I did my PhD at Michigan, a department that was well represented in things like the Women's Classical Caucus, and I nonetheless absorbed the implicit sense that people who "work on gender" (however we would want to define that) aren't "real philologists."

a) college is not trade school. the point is not only to get a high paying job b) this will destroy fields like social work and librarianship, which are super important but wildly underpaid even though they often require advanced degrees in part because they’re “care” jobs primarily held by women

From a very normal National Review article about the Odyssey and I'm fascinated by the straws people will grasp to insist that their opposition to this movie isn't ginned up, overly- online racism. There are things you could fairly criticize but not while staying on brand, so IMAX it is, boys!

The follow up doesn't really feel like it undermines the subtle cattiness here, @sentantiq.bsky.social. Please take this as my official notice that we are fighting!
“I was surprised by how many academics liked it,” Christensen says. “I had to be restrained a few times by my wife. Everybody knows that I’m the worst audience for the film.” After a long pause, he continues, “I’ve been saying to myself: ‘This is not Homer’s “Odyssey.” This is Nolan’s “Odyssey.” And it needs to be judged on different terms.’”

I think my favorite part of the Odyssey movie was the post-credit scene where we got to see all the other guys in Hades and Achilles kept insisting on doing bits. Casting Carrot Top as Achilles was a weird choice but I do think it worked.
