I absolutely agree that these euphemisms are an improvement on distinguishing a book without explicit sex scenes as "clean", which is obvs even more puritanical But part of why I am so hardline on saying "erotica" and "sex" is that like, these are perfectly natural, normal, and fun things to write

Because of widespread censorship and anxieties about "mature content" on many social media platforms, and an increasing desire to sanitise any potentially offensive topics, euphemisms for sex on the page have really rocketed in the genre spaces, especially "spice" in the last few years

A thing I mentioned on the Queerness in Speculative Fiction panel at FantasyCon this weekend is that as an author I've made a choice to pretty much never refer to my work with euphemistic terms like "spice", "steam", even "smut" I either say I've written erotica, or say "there is explicit sex"
