I went on a random Wikipedia deep dive that led me--as things things often do, don't ask--to the Crab Nebula, and I am once again emotional about the fact that this beautiful star-wreck connects us to our own ancient history since it's explosion was recorded in Japan, China, and Baghdad in AD 1054.

I spent a bit of time this morning trying to find out what it’s called when inheritance passes to the eldest child regardless of gender. I knew that when the kid is male it’s called “agnatic primogeniture” and when female it’s “matrilineal primogeniture.”

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

“In this fantasy setting there are four types of character, each of their magic powers balanced against eachother, and a fifth type whose powers are unbalanced as fuck and break all the rules the others must abide by. We call that one the protagonist” (I’m writing one of these books don’t @ me)

I try to avoid feeling smug about stuff given what’s going on in the world and I know I often say that “it was always bad and I always knew they sucked” is often used as a shield against having to face the possibility of being fooled by a charismatic artist.

The Royals and their retainers in Glassblade wield swords made of enchanted glasses that double as both weapons and as amplifiers of their power/signs of their status. This is not about that. This is about how I tried to make a play on "but iron, cold iron, is master of them all" but for glass.

One of my favorite things about writing a book 2 is getting into the deeper lore and offering a more critical eye on departed characters the first book’s protagonists remembered fondly. All this to say, we’re getting a lot more scrutiny on Matthew Schwan in Broken Vessels.

Years ago, one of my mentors described his metric for success with any book as being “it does well enough that I get to write the next one” and it really is the most relevant one I can think of.

The five PoV characters of Glassblade, drawn by Data2048"When he looked at her, her expression was totally different from the alternating looks of calm control and stern, flinty resolve he’d seen her wear in the last few days. Her hand tightened around his jacket, and her eyes were worried. Her lower lip almost trembled. He hesitated. “Are you… okay?” “I just.” Her voice faltered for a moment. “I just need you to promise me something.” He frowned. “Sure thing, what is it?” “Promise me that whatever you learn in there, whatever happens… you’ll do your best to stay you.” She took a slightly shaky breath. “That you’ll stay my brother.” Momentarily off-footed, Gabe paused. How did you promise something that seemed as obvious as the sun rising and the rain falling? Cody, Lina, Roberta, Aaron, Agnes, and John—despite how angry he was at both—they were family. No matter what his uncle said. No matter what had happened over recent days. He paused for a moment, then laid a hand over Lina’s. “You’re my family, you and all the others,” he said after a moment. “We made a promise under the tree. Whatever I find in there, I will not lie to you or betray that. Not ever.” She closed her eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and squeezed his hand. “… That’s not what I asked,” she said quietly, then gave a sad smile before letting go and walking past him."

Oh yeah, this is why I spent 36 chapters and almost 170,000 words setting up the climax of this book. 12 chapters of raw unfiltered kaboom, going off in iterative blasts, each one bigger than the last. Broken Vessels is gonna be so good, y'all.

I’ve just been deleting the “send me this post about your book” spam comments on my Instagram posts that aren’t even about my books lately but I’ve decided I’m just gonna have fun with them for a bit.
An Instagram post where a spam bot is asking me to send the “book” to their page (the post has nothing to do with books) and I reply “it’s a picture of a road.”

I think, rather than arguing that AI use for fiction is lazy, we should focus on the fact that it is rude, disrespectful, and insulting to your readers. Like why the hell would I want to engage with something so empty of human experience that no living hand touched it's creation?

Me chuckling at how I 100% decided that the Vacant Ones in Glassblade disrupt cell service because it’s a fantasy story set in a modern(ish) time and I needed a way to just arbitrarily shut off cellphones any time they’d ruin the plot. Like it’s a good dramatic point, but that’s why I did it.
