newrepublic.com/article/2100... For a decade I've been urging: get a clear general statement, have it ready to go, and have it widely known that the clear general statement is the whole response to particular cases. Here we are in 2026 with Ivy League chairs & deans saying "What do I do?"
“One thing that has certainly happened is complainants who aren’t affiliated with the university see something that upsets them,” she said. “And then they start calling colleagues, and chairs, and deans. Then that well-meaning chair or dean or whatever goes to the Title VI Office, saying, ‘Hey, I got this harassing email from someone upset about this thing that my colleague posted on social media. What do I do?’ And then that’s now taken as a complaint from someone inside the university. That’s how these external complaints, some from far-right-wing activists, get laundered as internal.”Jacob T. Levy

When a professor's or student's social media comments or extramural opinions generate controversy, the university needs no response more complicated than this. University administrators and publicity departments, store some version of this as a template response and resist the temptation to find reasons, excuses, or exceptions.
"As is true for all members of our scholarly community in their public commentary and social media engagement, X's comments solely represent his or her own views. As is true for all members of our scholarly community, X's ability to express those views is protected both by freedom of speech and in a different way by principles of academic freedom, which forbid the university from acting to punish academic staff or students for the content of their extramural expressed opinions. The university as an institution does not normally take positions on matters of social and political controversy, in order to best protect the freedom of its members to pursue inquiry that supports or opposes such positions. Accordingly the university does not normally comment, whether in support or in opposition, on the expressed opinions of its professors or students."
