From Shaun Micalef's recent book accusing Flinders of collecting indigenous skulls. He & Cook were explorers, & are soft targets. Better to learn more about Joseph Banks, the nameless men of the EastIndiaCo, Govn Brisbane et al, the men motivated by profit from colonisation, not science.

On YouTube the ads are all AI. Capitalism’s visual culture is just slop now. Once, for all its evils, it was aesthetically seductive, seemed to promise a better, more prosperous world. Now it just vomits up ugly shit.

Kym Day "Star Spangled Steer", 2026 Oil on canvas 42 x 54 in.
This painting by Greenville, South Carolina artist Kym Day seems innocuous in a way that belies the questionable character of the United States' economic reliance on beef production and consumption on the whole. Day is an academically trained artist in the truest sense, receiving rigorous foundations training *and* an immersion in various strata of art theory and art history at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. There is a strong commercial bent to her work, but it consistently reaches back into European modernism and 20th century avant-garde strategies conceptual deployed in painting and drawing, eg, surrealism, dadaism, and other kinds of irrational subversion (much like her MICA alum antecendent Jeff Koons.) The brown and white 'stars' are arranged flag-like on the side of the steer (the side of beef as it were), blending in with spots on the steer, of which one shape is vaguely reminiscent of North America.

Another west of Ireland #painting. "Dooghill" came out of cycling in west Mayo one day after leaving the Greenway and Clew Bay, and going north of Mulranny towards Ballycroy. This was a view west over Ballacragher Bay that had me in shape heaven. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Foreground of 4 small rough undulating lime green and yellow fields separated by uneven dry-stone walls that run at angles to the edges of the painting, before beyond them is a body of water, very pale blue almost white with touches of yellow, running the full width of the painting horizontally with 2 dark olive flat islets and on the far side is a horizontal strip of yellow land with pale blue low flat-ish hills behind on the left, while on the right is a higher pale purple-pink rounded hill. Further back in the distance in between is a flatish rounded pale blue mountain. Sky is pale cloudy lilac. Left foreground has dark green bushes, while on the right just past stone wall are low trees of dark blue and purple with holes through which we see the water. Signed bottom right in red, Liam Daly

Saving a snared zebra in 60 seconds. But it took a lot more than a minute to set this treatment in motion. Rangers found the stallion with a snare on his leg; Roan flew the vet team to Kenya's northern coast; Dr Lawi darted the patient, then the team moved in to remove the snare.

Any excuse for Ekranoposting
Nose on image of a Soviet-era Lun-class Ekranoplan, a ground-effect vehicle that resembles an airplane with stubby wings and too many engines in the wrong places. It is technically classified as a ship, though it flies just above the surface of the water using the ground effect, which greatly reduces drag and increases wing efficiency by preventing the formation of wingtip vorticies.
