#31daysofgraves Day 4: Entrance. The Schorr mausoleum in Druid Ridge Cemetery - or possibly a door to Middle Earth.
A green copper door rises to a delicate point like a gothic window, but the swirling, sinuous lines of the metal over viewing glass are pure Art Nouveau. The great-white stone frame of the door echoes its curving line except right at the top point an upside down triangle leads the eye to the weathered name of the Schorr family.

Went to a quilting supply estate sale today. I was doing pretty well at staying in my budget & on my list until I found out she died a decade ago - at which point I went after the whites & muslin like a pouncing velociraptor. Bought whole bins of the old thick stuff you can’t get anymore.

#31daysofgraves Day 3: This mausoleum window from Druid Ridge Cemetery is my favorite piece of funeral glass of all the ones I’ve seen so far.
Angled view of an arched stained glass window of three women in flowing Regency-ish gowns. The middle one in a red dress stands upright. To her right, a woman in a green gown looks to her. On her left, a woman in a blue gown leans on her. Behind them are impressionist trees and sky. Around the frame is a green and gold border with to dels for stylized flowers. Centered below the women is a pane of glass reading “Faith, Hope, and Charity. The greatest of these is Charity.” Two pieces of glass are missing from the green woman’s gown, showing stark white where her thighs would be.

#31daysofgraves Day 2: Urn. This is fancy one is in Mt Olivet, Hanover Pennsylvania.
Closeup of a carved urn at the top of a pillar. Stylized leaves run around its base, a carved wreath of flowers is looped on it, and a drapery half covers it.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

#31daysofgraves Day 1: Flower. This unique half carved, half metal one blooms in Druid Ridge Cemetery, Pikesville Maryland.
Closeup of the top of an arched white gravestone. Two sets of stylized leaves arc just below the top curve. Between them is inset a blooming rose made of new copper.

Bidding farewell to the #cemtember tag.
Side shot of an angel on a monument, silhouetted under a tree branch. It is looking out at a large cemetery with obelisks, mausoleums, and a variety of gravestones.

#Cemtember A forgotten and abandoned graveyard by the side of the road. No sign, no church, no flowers, no tending.
A mid-sized rounded gravestone with carved handshake and “Harriet E, wife of Noah Foster, died 1877” stands above ragged grass near the trunk of a dead, blasted tree. You have to look closely to see the two smaller stones, their rounded tops barely visible in the weeds, which are as tall as Harriet’s stone. This cemetery had no sign and was near no church.

#Cemtember Another gravestone being subsumed by nature.
A low angular stone, probably about a foot high in the back and a few inches off the ground in front, like another stone in the background. The tree was planted next to the stone is slowly absorbing it, roots and the trunk obscuring all but the letters “-usband… TS”

In about a decade the stone will have been entirely swallowed up. And the similar stone behind it, with a tree planted next to it, will be similarly disappearing.

I have more beautiful flowers to use for the 31 Days of Graves prompt, but none more fitting for the #cemtember contemplation of mortality. All things end, including memorials.
A gravestone has sunk so far into the ground that only one corner, showing a stylized circular flower with 3 leaves can be seen above the grass.

Quilt guild held a silent auction and I got *aggressive* about bringing home the laundry basket with 30 pounds of scraps.
A tall white plastic laundry basket staged in front of a bronze radiator in front of a window. Assorted fabric scraps fill it to the brim. A black cat sitting on the radiator cover is curiously sniffing a basket handle.

#Cemtember Druid Ridge Cemetery, Pikesville Maryland.
A green-patina life-sized sculpture of a naked man, right arm thrusting a huge feather above his head, left arm clutching his chest, knees buckling as he collapses at the moment of death, stands on a plinth. Behind him is a line of smaller, far less dramatic stones and green trees.

#Cemtember Mount Olivet, Washington DC. Moving away from long shot landscapes to “I’m proud of this photo but it doesn’t match a 31 Days of Graves prompt.”
A tight grouping of gravestones against a cloudy sky. From left to right: an urn on a pillar half out of shot, a small figure and a broken column with a carved wreath, a few plainer stones of various sizes half hidden behind a tall monument on the right of frame. A living bird sits on the top of this last pillar, eyeing me.

#Cemtember Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown Maryland. For all the weeping willows depicted on gravestones, this is the only one I’ve actually seen growing in a graveyard. (Nearly kept this shot for the 31 Days of Graves “tree” prompt.)
On the left side, a row of mid-height rounded gravestones. On the right, a fallen obelisk leans against a square marker. In the middle, behind them all, a beautiful, lush weeping willow.

Image: a series of yes/no questions for that lead to different outcomes.

Questions include “are you rich?”, “are you dashing?”, “are you a rake” and “are you a vicar?”

Outcomes include “You win the most beautiful daughter of the richest man in the county!”, “You remain a bachelor”, “You marry a dowdy cousin” and “You rescue a 23-year-old from Spinsterhood”.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows a brain. The brain is saying "I'm 30 and YOUNG! I only recently fully developed!"
The second panel shows a heart. The heart says "I hear ya! I can keep going for DECADES more!"
The third panel shows a spine's face. It weakly says, "I am old".
We zoom out and the spine is using a walker. It continues, "so very old".

#Cemtember Holy Cross, Ellicottville NY It wasn’t until I started posting every day that I realized just how often I frame my photos under a tree branch.
A tall cross center front, with lower gravestones framing it on either side and mostly mid-height arched and square gravestones beyond. Green trees form the backdrop and a leafy branch in the foreground arches down to the cross.

#Cemtember Continuing the Catholic theme from yesterday, the burial plot of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Mount Olivet in DC. Each grave has the woman’s religious name, her birth name, her age, and the number of years she was a nun.
Five rows of tightly packed identical crosses, with barely 6 inches between stones and maybe a foot between one row and the row behind it. Each cross has JMJ along the crossbar for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Below that, the woman’s details. Sample epitaph: Sr St Lucie, Little Sister of the Poor, nee Teresa Carr, d Nov 11 1901, age 34 - professed 7 years. One newer stone, set away from the cramped lines. Sr Marie Mathilde de la Croix, Little Sister of the Poor, nee Alicia Velasquez, d Oct 18 2016, age 103 - professed 82 years
