#BookWormSat follows the red roads of Avonlea. 📖🍁 Anne of Green Gables brings rural PEI to life: orchards, school paths, neighbourly gossip, and a girl who finds poetry in familiar fields. The countryside, seen through wonder. 🌳 1908 cover by George Fort Gibbs. #RuralLiterature #AnneofGreenGables

#FolkloreThursday 🎃🍁Ca On the Bay of Quinte, the old lantern changed its skin. Irish & Scottish settlers brought the turnip lantern; here, the pumpkin replaced the turnip. 🎃 In 1886, Kingston Daily News printed an early North American report of a pumpkin jack-o’-lantern. Same flame. New fruit. 🕯️🍂

#WyrdWednesday 🐉 High in mountains & shadowy caves, ancient #wyrms slithered: scaled, venomous & wingless. From Germanic lore, the wyrm was a great serpent or dragon, haunting tales from Beowulf to Tolkien’s Smaug. Before dragons breathed fire, there were wyrms. 🐲 🎨by illustrator John Bauer, 1911.

Modern historians have suggested that dragons were proven to premodern populations by none other than unearthed fossilized dinosaur bones. Given how close modern dragons look to these bones it is entirely possible, though dragon truthers would very much disagree. #WyrdWednesday

Jurassic Park begins with a mosquito trapped in amber preserving dinosaur blood. Real scientists have recovered extraordinary ancient material from fossils, but usable dinosaur DNA hasn't survived tens of millions of years. Sadly, your amber necklace cannot make a velociraptor. #WyrdWednesday

The White River Monster, or Whitey, may be the stuff of Ozark tall tales, but it's also perhaps North America's most friendly river monster. Often described as a giant fish, eel, gar, or dinosaur style sea monster, Whitey is defensive of fish, so be careful. #WyrdWednesday

In Irish tradition, ravens belonged comfortably at the borders of the Otherworld. One tale tells of three supernatural ravens that emerged every Samhain, carrying away 3 children from a síd until the warrior Caoilte slew them. Ravens and crows also haunt the tales of the Morrígan and Badb. 🐦‍⬛🕯️
