This Irish medieval manuscript was either created in Ireland & brought to the continent by Irish monks or created by them after they arrived. The dense geometric interlace, knotwork, & spiral patterns are hallmarks of Insular illumination. The angry Roman guard’s eye beam is a fantastic touch.
Detail of the illustration described in tbe quoted post focused on Jesus and the guard to his right holding a spear and who had a squiggly red beam from his eye to Jesus.

Giant Saint Christopher bears a heavy burden across river: it’s the world! But, a mystery, are those hermits in background pushing a dead body into the water or pulling it out? Ask Joachim Patinir, 1520, whose day is today.

90 years ago, the Jarrow Crusaders marched nearly 300 miles to London in protest at unemployment and poverty. Thomas Cantrell Dugdale’s 1936 painting captures their arrival from a Piccadilly interior (possibly the Ritz).

Today is the 64th anniversary of the London premiere of Dr. No, so it’s time for the story of the theft of not one but two portraits of the Duke of Wellington—because Goya’s portrait of him had been nicked from the National Gallery the previous summer, just 19 days after it went on display
Sean Connery in Dr No’s lair, about to go up a short flight of stairs when he spots a portrait of the Duke of Wellington on a stand. The original had been stolen from the National Gallery the previous year, and this was a joke by the Bond production team

Awa odori dancer. Japan.
Captured in a striking monochromatic portrait, a female dancer (odoriko) of the Awa Odori stands poised under the steep, sculptural curve of a woven straw hat (amigasa). Deep shadows cast by the braided reed brim frame her quiet, focused profile, highlighting her composed expression and serene intensity amid the festival energy. The stark contrast between her dark-trimmed collar, tied tasuki cord, and folded kimono brings out the crisp geometry and grace of her traditional attire. The photograph evokes a vivid, immersive sensory atmosphere: the resonant clang of kane gongs, the deep thrum of taiko drums, and the rhythmic melody of shamisen echoing through a humid Tokushima summer night, punctuated by the sharp clatter of wooden geta sandals on stone and the pure, contemplative spirit of the dancer frozen in time. Originating in Tokushima Prefecture, the Awa Odori is one of Japan’s most celebrated Bon Odori folk dance festivals, carrying a rich heritage that spans more than four centuries. Renowned for its lively anthem—"Odoru ahō ni miru ahō, onaji ahō nara odoranya son son" ("Dancers are fools and onlookers are fools, so if both are fools, you might as well dance!")—the festival brings together performing troupes (ren) to parade through the city streets. The iconic costume of the female dancers (josei-odori), defined by the distinctive steep-angled amigasa hat, tucked kimono, and high-stepped wooden geta, presents a harmonious synthesis of folk exuberance and courtly aesthetic discipline.

Woman from the small southern island of Okinawa, Japan. Late 19th century.
Seated with calm dignity in a late 19th-century studio portrait, a young Okinawan woman gazes directly into the camera, her dark hair swept up into a traditional kampāni topknot secured with a metallic jiifā hairpin. She wears a striking Okinawan kasuri (ikat) garment, its deep-dyed fabric decorated with geometric white resist-dyed motifs and fine vertical stripes layered over a checkered inner collar. Rendered in warm, aged sepia tones, the photograph evokes a quiet sensory atmosphere: the salty sea breezes of the Ryukyu archipelago, the rhythmic click-clack of a wooden handloom, the crisp texture of hand-dyed plant fibers, and the serene stillness of a woman standing between two eras as Okinawa transitioned from an independent kingdom to a modern Japanese prefecture. This archival photograph captures a key moment in Ryukyuan cultural history following the 1879 integration of the Ryukyu Kingdom as Okinawa Prefecture. The subject’s distinctive kampāni topknot and jiifā hairpin served as essential markers of Ryukyuan womanhood and social identity, worn to signify maturity and heritage before Meiji assimilation policies encouraged Westernized hairstyles and mainland Japanese fashion. Her attire showcases the region's extraordinary textile legacy—such as Ryūkyū kasuri and bashōfu (banana fiber weaving)—in which artisans manually bound, dyed using indigenous botanical indigo (ryūkyū-ai), and hand-wove threads into geometric ikat patterns.
