Something I realized recently wrt depictions of corsetry in fiction is that most people are only seeing them on dress forms from a distance. That makes them look like hard, solidly shaped shells that have to be cracked open to be taken off. 🗃️🪡

I found my in-progress early 19thc corset and my 1864 patent corset (now a bit too small), which counts as working on the outfits I need to get done. The first will ... probs work with a larger than ideal lacing gap, the latter will need panels inserted in the sides.

The entrance canopy on the medieval Jacob's Well, the church hall of Holy Trinity, Micklegate in York is a rare, highly ornate 15th-century wooden projection. It was originally from the demolished Old Wheatsheaf Inn on Davygate. It was added to the Grade I listed building in the early 20th century

It has a narrow bodice with lace and ribbon trimmings at the wide scoop neckline. The skirt is extremely large, with structure beneath to expand it a little to the sides and front, and extensively behind. It has a full trail beyond even this, and is paired with a white belt, and white layer that sits atop the back of the skirt (again trimmed with lace).

One of the things I love about 1800-1810 gowns is the experimental closures. This one, ca. 1807, has two self fabric ties that draw in the back at the high waist without actually being in channels - very simple and casual. hub.catalogit.app/genesee-coun... 🗃️🪡

It's hard to look at quilted bonnets at this time of year, but these insulated hoods remind us that the cold will always come back. I must confess that I'm somewhat jealous of the options historical women had for keeping warm in the winter - these are better than beanies. 🗃️🪡

It's so important to adjust early 19thc gowns on the form so that the back doesn't hang down. I see a lot of museum photos with the back waistline a few inches lower than the front and the skirt correspondingly "trained", and it gives the idea that this was intentionally done by the dressmaker.

With today's theft of Vix torc, here's what has been taken... The torc was found as part of a burial & placed around neck of the interred. Despite its size, it weighs only 480g (less that half the weight of the Snettisham Great torc). It is STUNNING. #Archaeology #Gold #Torcs 🏺 1/2
