It continues to amaze me that the industry/culture that so demonizes cultural theory and humanities are its greatest purveyors. Naming machine learning “artificial intelligence” is gramsci level politics. yet when we call that naming what it is, suddenly it doesn’t matter what you call it.

"Ed Sheeran had an opportunity show that we won't be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine. Instead he caved to people who refuse to accept what the world knows. A genocide is happening in Gaza. We all need to speak out against it.

This is a good example of what @ntusikov.bsky.social and I have been warning about for years: US tech companies are uniquely susceptible to extra-legal US government pressure (Google isn’t compelled to change Lake Ontario’s name.) Because of this, they represent a direct threat to Canadian autonomy.

My article, "Philosophy as a Normative Discipline", which was accepted by Philosophy @triphilosophy.bsky.social last year, is finally online (& open access)! It outlines my "normative" account of the nature, point & peculiarities of philosophy. Dare I say it's the best metaphilosophical paper ever?😜
Philosophy as a Normative Discipline
Yao Lin
Bernard Williams contends that philosophy is part of a broader humanistic enterprise of ‘making sense of’ ourselves and our activities, including the activity of science. Whereas the scientific enterprise purports to offer an absolute conception of the world as it is (independently of any local perspective on it), the humanistic enterprise cannot disengage itself from the contingent history of our ideas upon which it operates. While I agree with Williams that philosophy should be more attentive to history, his account of philosophy, from which he derives this conclusion, is fatally flawed, being unable to meet three perennial challenges to any principled defense of philosophy as a discipline: i.e., the questions of authority, incubativity and peculiarity. Those challenges can be met only if we understand philosophy not as a humanistic discipline that is part of the broader humanistic enterprise, but as a distinctively normative discipline that tasks itself with finding answers to explicitly or implicitly normative questions, in contrast to various scientific and humanistic disciplines of descriptive inquiry. In this paper, I argue for the equivalence of philosophicality with normativity, explicate the theoretical and practical implications of the normative account of philosophy, and defend it against potential objections.

This is so funny
Some leaders say they insist on full-time in-person work because it boosts productivity, despite clear evidence that it does not. Others claim it’s about collaboration, creativity or culture. Our new research reveals that the objection to any work from home is more likely to be driven by something else entirely: ego.

Case by case, there may be good reasons for teams to work together in person. As a general rule, though, it turns out that ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities. They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshiped at the office altar.

Asked a contractor pal about the $13M paint job peeling off the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Him: I knew that was going to happen. Me: How? Him: You can't rush that kind of job. The pool bottom has to be really dry or it'll exude water. And you have to clean it like a mofo first...
Photo from Washingtonian shows some guy standing by the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool holding a sheet of blue paint--roughly 9 inches square--that peeled off the bottom a few weeks after being put on.

One problem is that, even if this works in theory/narrow settings, in practice it faces a severe collective action/partial compliance problem: for various reasons, many people are going to engage/platform them anyway, which might make partial non-platforming ineffective or even counterproductive.

That's right. Our single member districts are another anachronism that was, at the time it was introduced, a wholesome innovation. Congress forced states to use them starting in the mid-1800s to end the unfair practice of states allocating all seats to the party who controlled the state legislature.

Boston Globe mock front page from April 9, 2016. Date says April 9, 2017, with giant headline “DEPORTATIONS TO BEGIN” and “Markets sink as trade war looms.”
