I know that I'm getting old because I'm increasingly finding that the clothes in places like Zara, H&M and River Island are absolutely preposterous whereas the stuff in M&S is pretty cool.

Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.

The reason that AI art will never be any fucking good is that it was developed by an industry that runs on messianic overconfidence, with the aim of simulating the output of various creative industries that rely on overcoming self-doubt and insecurity to produce work of any worth.

This response is understandable, and feels compassionate. I said very similar things about the area that I grew up, which voted heavily for Brexit. But the thing is: these people have been indulged in their ideas — which are racist, and also simply incoherent — for over a decade.

ITV News just vox-popped an older northern woman who said that she had switched from Labour to Reform because she was angry that illegal migrants were "getting hotels when British people can't get hotels". At some point Labour surely just has to say these people are completely politically illiterate

No. If they do that they are exacerbating the issue, which is that people who've abandoned Labour feel ignored and condescended to by a left-leaning, metropolitan elite. If Labour calls people politically illiterate what good do you think that would do?

I’d hypothesise this happened here too: hospitals, magistrates courts, police stations etc concentrated in bigger centres, so solid jobs go, local services then fold, shops close - a downward spiral 1/2

another interesting (but older) datum on the "male loneliness crisis" is that if you look at historic data, women have historically reported more social isolation and the "crisis" became a thing when men started to approach parity.

Meanwhile, on threads, which actually is like what people on twitter think bluesky is like, a "teacher, author, poet" speaks...
there is no reason for anyone outside college-level and higher literature students and academics to be reading books written more than fifty years ago.

yes, i mean adults and kids.

yes, i mean in schools.

yes, i mean in college unless someone is specializing in older literature.

we need to stop wasting time with outdated garbage and teach students contemporary texts.

all we’re doing is teaching them to hate reading and reject understanding the world as a result.
