NZ First pushes for ban on backyard fireworks
New Zealand First has made a fresh push for a ban on backyard fireworks, after the leaders of National and Labour shot the idea down in Tuesday's debate.

The party wants to ban the public sale and private use of fireworks, blaming them for frightening animals, starting fires and causing havoc for emergency services.

In a statement, a spokesperson said the legislation was already written and ready to be introduced to Parliament within the first 100 days of the next government.

NZ First lodged a member's bill proposing a ban in November last year.

The proposed ban would also stop the manufacture and import of fireworks for private use, but professionally organised public displays would still be permitted.

"This is not about being 'nanny state'," the statement said. "This is about bringing some common-sense into what is a desperately needed conversation about the future of fireworks in our community."

In Tuesday night's TVNZ leaders' debate, National's Christopher Luxon and Labour's Chris Hipkins both answered "no" when asked whether fireworks should be banned from public sale.

Under current rules, fireworks can be sold to people aged 18 and over for just four days a year, from November 2 to 5. There is no nationwide restriction on when they can be used.

This year's Guy Fawkes celebrations will go ahead under the existing rules, just two days before the November 7 election.

One of the interesting things is how much 'employment' under the below policy approach is indicative of individual worth & value (in fact, morality). Thus 'unemployment' is constructed as a problem of individual/personal failure, and so the policy 'solutions' are then designed to counter this.

Like clockwork, the govt that has done more to destroy employment than any other in decades is trying to get re-elected by blaming people for being unemployed. No solutions, only punishment. Pure cynicism. www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...

However, also as Eddie mentions, there is a tiny minority who desperately hate this law/policy. But the thing is, despite their rhetoric, THIS IS NOT BECAUSE IT IS BAD LAW/POLICY. As Eddie & I say, this is fairly model law/policy. No, they hate this because they think we shouldn't exist.

Anyway. While 95% of the country was having a good faith debate about a hard issue on where to draw the line, 5% were mourning their loss of capacity to act abusively. Bob McCoskrie and, apparently, Winston Peters are speaking for that 5%. And they want to impose their views on everyone else. No.

I teach statutory interpretation. For part of the course we look at how to translate policy ideas into final legislation - identifying the need to legislate, crafting wording, advice from officials, select committees, SOPs etc etc. The eg we use is conversion practices: a short piece of topical law.

Credit to Hayden Donnell for asking Winston directly about his transphobia on two occasions during his little tour of the North Shore and peeling off that veneer of charm to reveal what he is for a few seconds. thespinoff.co.nz/politics/07-...
“She's a total nobody,” he insists to The Spinoff. “I'm not offending anybody. I'm in a public place, and she's saying that I've got no right to come to a public place, and only you would give her coverage for an extraordinarily arrogant argument like that. What's your next question?” The Spinoff goes back to Anderson, asking what he’d say to someone like that, who’s worried about her child and the effect his policies are having on him. “Why doesn’t she wait till the child grows up before she starts deciding for a child what the child wants?” he ventures.

For a second, the charisma is gone, replaced by something darker. But then, informed that Anderson’s son isn’t a young child, he gets back to more familiar territory. “You don't know how old? This is a jack up. I'm not wasting my time on such silly questions. Go back to The Spinoff, and you're not going to win the election,” he says. Then he flashes that grin. The eyes twinkle.

Impossible to invent something as absurd as the Minister for Cracking Down On Truancy And School Lunches not knowing it is the school holidays www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

'Why are you not in school?' It’s school holidays

David Seymour stopped to speak to some children at Velocity Valley in Rotorua, giving them a piece of advice.

“Don’t trust politicians,” he said. “Are you a politician?,” they questioned.

After the three children asked if he was going to be on the news and waved at the cameras, he said: “hey, one question, how come you guys aren’t at school?”

It’s school holidays, they said.

Seymour said they could still go into school, but the kids didn’t seemed thrilled by that idea.

“No, it’s ok,” they said before walking away.

Also minority government is a thing, there's a difference between some sort of a NACT-TOP coalition (NZF role unclear) (all signals say National aren't interested and TOP's policies don't align) and a NACT minority government with NZF and TOP played off against each other.

Have a look at this nightmare of the votes:seats conversion in Quebec and then see if you can tell me with a straight face you think reopening NZ's electoral system is a good idea. 25% plus or minus 3 can get 59 or 40 or 19 seats. 12% plus or minus 1 can get you 9 or 0. Absolute nightmare.
