National Rape Hotline Calls Are Up 60% Since the Cornell Case Broke. It’s Just One Way Survivors Are Speaking Up
For sexual assault survivors, the Cornell case can feel both infuriating and empowering.

The pressure on female survivors of SA to publicly name and shame our abusers “or else he’ll do it again” is more misogyny. The pressure on women to sacrifice ourselves for community safety is disgusting. Any pressure should be the burden of the abuser and his collaborators.

I have been thinking about this article, and particularly this excerpt, quite a lot over the last couple of days. It’s a “research demonstrates what we already knew” scenario, like chronic pain finally leaving traces on an MRI. I’ve known my whole life. I’m so tired of knowing.
Screenshot reading:

Let's start with what people misunderstand about sexual violence on college campuses.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.

For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Mind you, we don’t actually see any of our legal processes mobilized for victims the way we see them mobilized by perpetrators. It’s all just a victim-blaming justification for violence victims experience at the hands of the system itself.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

The most common outcome of a report to Title IX is that nothing happens. That’s by design. According to school policies (and now, Trump’s 2020 federal regulation), a report is just a way for schools to receive information about violence. It does not require any action from the school.

American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) male for #BirdoftheDay theme #BlueSkies. #birds #Florida
A horizontal image of a male American Kestrel standing on the right of a large pine branch with body facing left, back and tail towards viewer and head looking back in profile. The smallest falcon in North American, but arguably one of the prettiest, the kestrel has a slate blue cap and wings and two black slashes on the face, one on each side is coming down to the shoulder from the dark eyes. What can be seen of the breast and underside are white with some black spots. There is slate blue on the wing and warm rusty color on the back, accented with black spots and crescents. The tail is in shadow and dark. The bird has bright yellow/orange lores and feet. The background sky, above and below the branch, is clear blue.

In case anyone else needs it, the magic phrase for shutting down men picking apart a sexual violence case by blaming victims is: “The only people who would say something like that are rape apologists, rapists, or both.” You don’t have to argue with them on merit when their claims have no merit.

Yes, but frats are still the very best place to start. Frats are where boys become men. And specifically, some of the most powerful men in our society. They are arguably a lot more influential than most of the other men’s orgs in this list. Banning frats will open the door to banning the others.

A core part of the problem is that parents want their sons to be able to access male privilege more than they want to stop sexual violence. You have to let go of the fraternities. And the men’s only athletic teams. And any other boys clubs.

We live in a society that punishes people who are assaulted. We question them, we shame them, we disbelieve them. Many survivors instinctively do that societal work for us. Survivors question themselves, they shame themselves, they don't believe their own version of events. We've trained them!

Just as we've seen in the discourse this week, institutional betrayals of survivors by universities are usually met with thousands of people saying, "Why didn't she just go to the police?" And this is (part of) the answer. The police betray survivors just as consistently as universities do.

One of the reasons that researchers suspect police react to sexual assault disclosures that way is because the rate of sexual violence perpetration among police is much higher than the general population.

The primary problem is the culture of policing itself. Police hugely overestimate the number of false allegations. They don't listen to survivors' statements as much as they try to poke holes in them. I watched this firsthand for years as a hospital victim advocate. It's gutting to witness.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: US police actively prevent consequences for rapists by hitting victims with a wall of demoralizing hostility and skepticism, and then using their institutional credibility to undermine victim testimony and sabotage evidence and process steps.
