A preening Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) for the #BirdoftheDay alt theme #LongBeak. #birds #Florida
A preening Wilson's Snipe is standing in shallow dark water preening, on the right side of a horizontal frame. The bird's yellowish legs and mottled brown body is facing right, but the snipe is contorted so their striped head is turned completely to the left in profile, showing off the very long bill which is angled downward, parting the tail feathers. The tail has some rusty red feathers at the end of it facing the viewer. Another foraging snipe is out of focus behind the preening bird. The left side and top of the frame has green grasses.

Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) has one of the #BestBeaks. Also beautiful in breeding colors. #BirdoftheDay #birds #Florida #pink
A dark vertical frame with a stunning Roseate Spoonbill in breeding colors, perched in nice light on a branch in the bottom left half. The wading bird has long pink legs, a long white/light pink neck and a long blue/gray bill with a large spatulate spoon shape at the end of it. Accents of bright deep yellow are around the bird's red eye and where the wing meets the shoulder/neck. The wings are pink blending into brilliant red at the top. The background is dark with greenery and a large gray and brown tree trunk running diagonally from right to upper left over the bird's head.

Northern Yellow Warbler (Setophaga aestiva) immature female in Wild Coffee (Psychotria nervosa). I have other recent photos that might beat it, but it's #BestoftheMonth I have ready to post. #birds #BirdoftheDay #Florida #backyard #migration
An immature, female Northern Yellow Warbler is perched in at tree branch, facing left in profile in this horizontal frame. The little bird has a yellow/green/gray wash over her with slightly brighter yellow at the tail and on the head. She has a white eye ring and somewhat darker wings. The green quilted leaves of Wild Coffee are framing her in the foreground and out-of-focus background. The light pale bird stands out from the darker background.

Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) for the #BirdoftheDay theme #BokehBirds. #birds #Florida #Backyard
A small Black-and-white Warbler is perched upright, facing forward, head turned to left, on an arched horizontal branch, framed by large in-and-out of focus green leaves. The little bird is white in the center of his neck, breast, and belly, has a white eyebrow stripe, and heavy black-and-white striping everywhere else visible. The background is a brilliant, abstract, out-of-focus design of mostly bright yellow, accented with bright yellow-greens, so the neutrally colored bird stands out.

An American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) male, the smallest and certainly one of the most beautiful North American falcons is #BirdoftheDay for the theme #Raptors. #birds #Florida #KissimmeePrairie
A dark, dramatically-lit vertical frame featuring a male American Kestrel, facing forward right with head and small beak turned back to the left. His bright orange feet are perched one over the other atop a thin branch with a few green leaves and one red leaf on it. A beautiful small falcon, he has slaty blue on the head with some accents of russet, a dark brown eye and bold vertical streaks of black coming down from his eye and behind it. His breast is light, with some rust color, and his belly has small dark spots scattered on it. You can see some under tail bands. The light is coming from the right and the background is quite dark olive green. Though small, he looks intent and fierce as any other raptor would as he looks for prey.

A Northern Cardinal male is #BirdoftheDay for the theme #Light&Shadow. #birds #backyard #Florida
A horizontal image of a male Northern Cardinal perched on a thin wood branch with another branch angled up behind him, facing left in profile. His wings show motion blur as they are lifted a little bit behind his back, and his tail is running out of the image to the right. He is in dappled shade with dramatic areas of light and dark streaked down his head and onto his breast, showing off his brilliant red feathers, black mask, dark eye, and red beak and crest. The background is dark green, becoming darker behind the bird to the right. He has a bit of an "angry bird" expression.

Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni is a sharptail cuckoo bee that doesn't seem to have a common name. A kleptoparasite, it lays eggs in the nest cells of leafcutting bees (like the White-footed Leafcutter recently posted) and its larva eat the host pollen. #Florida #invertebrate #insect #macro
Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni - an interesting sharptail cuckoo bee is hanging upside down to a dead flower stem, clinging with its front four legs and mandibles, resting and waiting for rain to come in. The bee has a segmented rusty red thorax and legs, warm dark brown wings, black body, head, and antennae, with pale yellow in the eye. Though it has a bit of white fuzz in places, it does not have the hairs seen on pollen collecting bees, since it is klepto parasitic and its offspring steal the pollen from host bees. The background of this vertical frame is shades of green.

A Reddish Egret white morph is standing in horizontal profile view facing right, in still, shallow, gray-blue water in very late day light. The graceful, large, long-necked, wading bird is all white with black legs and a long pink bill with black at the end of it. The egret is caught in a split second of its hunting “dance”, with both long wings arched beautifully over their head and pointing downward towards the water forming a canopy. A part of the bird’s reflection in the water is below and looks golden in the warm light. Reddish Egrets are fairly rare, and a white morph even more so. This species typically dances and spins with wings up over the head like this while looking for fish — a joy to watch in action.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) keeping a piercing eye on his nest in Everglades National Park for the #BirdoftheDay theme #EyeOfTheWild. #birds #raptors #Florida
A vertical portrait of an Osprey in lovely warm, late day light, perched atop a bare, gray snag with his dark rich brown, feathered back and long wings facing the viewer. His white head is turned back toward the right in profile, showing off his piercing yellow eye and impressive hooked beak. There is a dark black/brown stripe from the beak to the neck. The background is a clean medium dark gray.
