Warum ließ Wolfram Weimer drei für den Buchhandlungspreis nominierte Buchhandlungen vom Verfassungsschutz überprüfen? Er begründete das mit der Expertise seiner Beamten. @t-online.de vorliegende Dokumente zeigen jetzt: Seine Fachabteilung empfahl, alle Buchhandlungen auszuzeichnen.

“what happens at the BL is, mostly, the wrong kind of research. It’s about the dull old humanities, not the cutting-edge sciences. It mostly looks backwards, not forwards. So it’s regarded, not least by our political leaders, as a backwater.”

AI produces MORE editorial labor, not less. “[To weed out slop] the journal doubled its deputy editors from 6 to 11 & nearly doubled its sr editors from roughly 30 to 60. All of this is volunteer labor, unpaid academics donating time to maintain scientific quality.“ www.forbes.com/sites/johndr...

If you're thinking about using gen-AI to "write" books, this 🧵 is for you. I’m a highly experienced editor who’s been in the biz a long time. Recently I’ve had manuscripts come to me where the author has used gen-AI – not for writing, I’ve been assured, but for “structuring” or "organising"

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

The correct letter-to-the-editor responding to a recent bad op-ed about how classical music is too unpopular. (by Brian Barone, faculty at Berklee)
To the Editor:

Evan Shinners suggests that the classical music industry could easily win new converts if it would only give up its attempts at popularization and let the supposed greatness of untrammeled masterworks speak for itself. The superiority of classical music over all other offerings is taken for granted. Mozart is “something better” than a rock star. Not just rock, but jazz and rap come in for subtle digs. Meanwhile, Bach’s music is “transcendent.”

But is it? If it were, there would be no crisis. If Bach’s music simply transcended the gulf between 18th-century Thuringia and 21st-century New York, then presumably New Yorkers would already be listening to it in droves.

The truth is that it’s not just Bach who has trouble getting a hearing these days. Ours is a moment in which music from many different times and places is available instantaneously, and yet musicians of every stripe are struggling.

Re-erecting old hierarchies won’t solve that, but maybe pluralistic, noncommercial ways of valuing music and new solidarities between musicians will.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:
Some thoughts:
When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge.
You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be.
Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history.
You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired.
Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

I don't know maybe I'm insane, but afaik we know by now that avoiding hallucinations where an llm is in the background is mathematically impossible. Which means any transcription would have to be double-checked by hand. Which in turn defeats the purpose of using a tool like that in the first place?
