just finished Save a Seat for Me, by @markanthonyneal.bsky.social. it’s variously poignant, funny, and disarmingly frank. while it’s very much a book about Black fatherhood and Black family in the US, it contains many insights into the relationships and generational dynamics that define any family.
the first hardcover edition of Save a Seat for Me, sitting on a dark wooden surface. the cover is a bright yellow, with a small line drawing of two chairs facing each other.

reading this, it does seem as if “rationalism” is an elaborate intellectual architecture designed primarily to support the idea that if you were born white, male and clever then you are the genetic elite and entitled to rule.

on the one hand, I could ramble about Coltrane for hours. but on the other, I'm aware of how much has already been said and written about him and his music (and a good deal of it worthwhile), *and* I would want anything I put in writing about Coltrane to be worthy of his art

John Coltrane, of blessed memory, was born on this date 100 years ago. his legacy of artistic and spiritual work lives on in the recordings. Happy Coltrane Day to all who celebrate.

that’s Dawkins holding a Jazzmaster in the cover photo. I can’t hear guitar tone well enough to say if he’s actually playing a Jazzmaster on some or all of this album. but if he is, he must’ve been one of the only blues musicians to play a JM. seems like a flex tbh

and now I’m really on my bullshit, and on a pulpit (…on my bullshit pulpit?) but seriously if there’s something I were to preach, it would be that music is inherently a spiritual practice because it is always a reckoning with the human perception of time

“Coltrane had recalled an earlier ‘spiritual awakening’ during which he ‘humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.’ Maybe this wasn’t so simple as soothing his listeners with the sunshine.” Yes. Happiness ≠ perpetual pleasure. #giftlink
