In 1789, ice on the #Danube broke resulting in severe flooding. Maria Magdalena Kauth responded by composing and publishing ‘Das Gemälde der Natur’ to raise funds for the victims of Linz. Depicting a storm, the #melodrama commemorated the flood, victims, and rescuers.

#Beethoven’s only opera, ‘Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe’, premiered at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien on 20 November 1805. It was later revised and is known today as ‘Fidelio’. The drama had also been set by Pierre Gaveaux (1798), Ferdinando Paer (1804), and Simon Mayr (1805).
