Discworld QOTD, from The Fifth Elephant
“Well . . . if it happened . . . if it did . . . would you do what Vimes did? Carrot? Would it be you who picked up a weapon and came after me? I know you won’t lie. I’ve got to know. Would it be you?”
A little snow slid down from the trees. The wolves watched. Carrot looked up for a moment, at the gray sky, and then nodded.
“Yes.”
She sighed.
“Promise?” she said.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

I was also going to suggest Chrestomanci / Diana Wynne Jones, though it looks like most of her books in audio form are abridged? The Dark Lord of Derkholm is in audio unabridged, as is Howl’s Moving Castle though that might be a bit much romance?

(I've now sent myself down a personal rabbithole because I initially typed 'unremarked on' but I think a queernormative setting still allows for e.g. coming out, ceremonies, choosing how you identify and changing that, celebrating that, but without angst or pushback?)

Laura Bradley @lcbradley.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
E.g. Murderbot and Wayfarers series are queernormative but if there was a planet/city somewhere in the whole setting that had different norms, given size of setting that wouldn't necessarily take me out of it. But POV characters and associates live in a world where queerness is norm.

Laura Bradley @lcbradley.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Prob where within the primary setting/community of the story, queer characters aren't experiencing bigotry for being queer, relationships and family structures of all types are equally normalised, same with gender identity and expression. Maybe not that the whole universe of the story is like that?

You'd certainly hope so! Obviously everyone has their own preferences on access, so maybe it's more like her own kitchen as it is and she thought that would be easier to get used to or etc

... That doesn't look like a correctly adapted bench for Molly, right? You'd imagine a bench she could get under and a higher oven might help for wheelchair access (and maybe lower dropping chance 🫣). Though optimistically they asked her and she just didn't want anything changed! #gbbo

Giorgio Locatelli clearly just thinks Lauren Steadman is swell. She keeps a tidy bench, she shrugs and figures out how to quenelle one-handed, she opened comp with sushi like she couldn't imagine why not. He keeps appearing in background watching her fondly, and it's very cute. #CelebrityMasterchef

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

Discworld QOTD, from Lords and Ladies
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvelous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.

The cranberries being dried feels wrong to me, but on a flavour profile level halloumi with like a cranberry sauce does sound like something that could work? (Or at least, something I'd try.) The vegetable omelette it was alongside is the pairing that makes the whole thing upsetting!

If you see “dolls” in a course title and do not immediately realize that the instructor will use dolls as a lens to think about other things—gender, parenting/childhood, consumerism, etc.—then you couldn’t teach your way out of a wet paper bag and your opinions about teaching are garbage.
