I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

day 1 of my #artober list is FROG. i made this using tiled.art which is a really cool browser tool.
a square digital artwork shows a repeating pattern of the same frog tile, rotated to fit together, in the style of m.c. escher's tessellated drawings. the frogs are in a seated position, with huge circular eyes. they're in three shades of green with a dark outline.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The title is “Cats living together”.
The first panel shows a black cat and orange cat cuddling with their eyes closed. The orange cat says “I love you”. The black cat says “I love you too”.
The second panel zooms in on them.
The third panel shows the orange cat opening its eyes.
The fourth panel shows the orange cat raising its paw to punch the black cat. It says, “Actually you know what”.

Famously, the Allies dissolved the German government and propped up two new puppet governments. Infamously, virtually every serious antifascist today agrees that the Allies shoulda gotten even tougher because too many ex-Nazis scored positions of power in the new puppet governments.

One of the important hills I'll die on is that the digital rights space needs more historians because so we understand that many of the problems we're facing stem from pre-digital ways of organizing society and need holistic fixes that don't get bogged down in the high-tech boogeyman of the week.

Universities discourage printing/hard copy while actively avoiding investment in serious, structural decarbonization, like fixing aging, energy inefficient buildings; and while investing heavily in provisioning environmentally-destructive AI to students "for free."

This is a little mean but I also think the idea that “AI must be taught in college” is an older generation projecting their own tech incompetency and anxiety onto a younger one. It sounds interchangeable from saying “TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat should be taught in college,“ which is just lame.

Unfortunately, I don’t buy the idea that AI competency is an ”essential skill” that “must be taught” in college. College is about learning how to learn and that is best done with books and paper. You can figure out AI after college if you want!

Tenure-line faculty ARE expensive. But so is a contract with Anthropic, OpenAi, Google, and Microsoft. Some of the services that those companies provide are worth it for universities to purchase (email, word processing, etc.), but I don't see the ROI on paying for a proprietary version of ChatGPT.
