I was listening to a podcast about ALS today and learned that one of Lou Gehrig’s nicknames was Biscuit Pants because apparently he had a big fat case of junk in the trunk that looked like a pair of rear end biscuits in his little baseball uniform

It’s truly wild going to Montreal and seeing all these purpose-built 3, 4, and 5 floor apartment buildings that are, like … meant to be apartments? Coming from Toronto where bylaws banned the construction of apartment buildings (except on certain streets) for many years, it’s such a revelation.

I think this is genuinely one of the funniest bits Maya Rudolph has ever done. I sing “to what end — TO what end” to myself all the time. Also, “perpestrated by the Chinese” and “show me the receeps” are just perfection. She’s so fucking funny and I wish her joy in everything she does.

Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

I would one jillion times prefer that restaurants use crappy phone pictures of actual food that they make instead of geometrical AI monstrosities. My sister and I walked by a new breakfast place the other day and all the pictures of food that they had up in their windows were nauseating AI images.

The Queen’s students like the same canned cocktail as me and they keep buying up everything the liquor store has in stock and it is ruining my life.

Several times a week I sing a little song of my own composing called “what am I doing with my life?” It goes: what am I doing with my liiiiiiiife? Oh no, what am I doing with my liiiiiiiiife.

I've just finished the Uganda chapter (re: children who were abducted by Joseph Kony returning to their families) and I am absolutely in bits. This is genuinely phenomenal writing and reporting. If you follow me you NEED to read this. Sally Hayden is a fucking hero in so many ways. #speirghorm

15yo is unexpectedly home this weekend (he was supposed to be working in a volunteer capacity at a Cub Scout camp, but he’s sadly unwell). Please enjoy this video that we both found extremely charming and funny (also, I would eat the hell out of this sandwich)

My neighbour likes to joke that I have the most interesting job in the world. I don’t really think that’s true, but then this week I wrote an article about reproductive choice in Valley of the Dolls, and now I’m working on a piece about honey bee research in Canada so … maybe?

You would think that the bumblebees that I GRACIOUSLY allow to live in the wall of our house (in a nook in the outer stone wall) would have figured out by now that I come in peace, but they still get so suspicious every time I go out back to hang up laundry

There’s this cool alt skateboarding gal who works at our local Food Basics. Yesterday she told me I had Miss Frizzle vibes (I think because I was wearing a skirt with a bunch of egrets on it). Then she said, “sorry, some people might not take that as a compliment, but it was meant as one”. Girl!!

A fun thing about living close to campus in a university town is that sometimes I get a front seat to student relationship drama. Just overheard a breakup happening on my front lawn - the third (!!!) since I’ve lived in Kingston. At least this girl recognized that her now ex was manipulative trash!

Was telling someone yesterday that my two most important traits as a journalist are a) I’m very nosy and want to know all the ins and outs of how people live their lives and b) I’m easily hyped up, so if someone is excited about their research or a project they’re doing, I’m right there with them

I tend to be a bit sceptical of claims that people get signs from dead loved ones. I think we see what we want to see, and that’s ok! But this morning I randomly found this 20 Euro cent coin from Spain on the sidewalk and I really do believe it’s a little hello from my grandmother.

For @foreignpolicy.com, I reviewed Sally Hayden’s new book This Is Also a Love Story: A Reporter’s Search for Goodness in a Cruel World. For me, this work felt like a good reminder that, even in the midst of horrifying catastrophes, care and kindness are present. Gift link:

Me, last night, after 15yo returned from being a Cub Scout leader: how did it go? Did everyone listen to you? 15yo: pretty much. but, you know, it’s scouts, it’s where neurodivergent kids go to learn knife skills. so listening isn’t their strong suit. (He’s a neurodivergent kid, for the record)

My hot take is that airplanes fly through witchcraft, and not necessarily the good kind. My own personal satanic panic is that I just know that people are doing dark rituals just to get those babies off the ground. Physics, nothing!!

It’s been just over a month since my grandmother died, and man. I’m still feeling kind of blindsided by it, I guess. It’s wild that she was in her 90s but her death still, somehow, doesn’t seem real. I feel like I could send her an email and she’d reply with one of her whacky responses.

I’m in this period of intense anxiety where my brain will latch on to anything — truly anything! — in order to have something to spiral over. It’s so exhausting and distressing. I feel bonkers and would love a break from waking up at 3:30 am with my heart pounding over some new asinine thing.

Watching all the Queen’s students being moved in to their apartments by their parents and realizing that (God willing) my kid might be starting university in three years and woof. Time is cruel. He was a baby literally just yesterday. I can’t believe they let babies attend postsecondary programs.

I was in Montreal last weekend, then got back to Kingston at 8 pm Monday night only to turn around and head out to Toronto on the 6:19 am train the next day. Then took the GO train to Guelph yesterday. I’ve spent 12 hours on trains over the past five days and my sad arthritic joints hate me.

Years ago I had a dream that I was a trans man and the name I chose for myself was Laurent, in honour of the St Lawrence River. Anyway, thinking of that in the midst of all this discussion about Lake Ontario, etc. Feels very on-brand that I chose the French version of a famous saint’s name lmao

Montreal day 3: we were killing time last night before going to grab dinner, and it was pouring out, so we ducked into a church where a group of nuns were doing some kind of sung service before putting the Eucharist (which was out for adoration) away for the night.

We got to Montreal around 11 pm last night, got on the metro only to discover a very drunk Swiss man arguing with a very drunk Quebecois man. Lots of “FERME TA YEULE” “FUCK YOU” “CALME-TOI”, and then “VIVE LA SUISSE” yelled over and over. I missed this city!!!

I really thought that my anxiety about 15yo going to camp had improved this year — since, you know, it was his 5th year and nothing bad has happened yet — but then he came home and my sleep suddenly improved dramatically and I realized that I’d been clenching every muscle in my body for two weeks

My church is a downtown cathedral in a city with a sizeable unhoused population, and we do a lot of programming geared towards that community (e.g. a soup kitchen, a drop-in centre, and an overnight shelter, all run by well-trained volunteers). You know, because Jesus wanted us to help the poor.

I’m so tired of anxiety. Every day is a spiral and it sucks so bad and I don’t have a therapist or psychiatrist anymore because they recently retired and the only good thing is that, through years of work, I’ve learned that I will not die if things are not immediately resolved when they feel acute
