or people who will, say, have cancer in 10 years what treatments could we have had? the recent explosion in targeted and immunotherapy, CAR-T, etc has been frankly incredible and this hardly seems like the time to pull the rug out from scientists

in addition to the ablism, it's false reassurance -- nearly half of adults have hypertension, a lot have diabetes or high cholesterol, 7% are immunocompromised… people we encounter in our daily lives all the time we think of as healthy take BP meds, cholesterol meds, take mAbs for IBD…

This is awesome. I did my MD/PhD at UW and can say that Dr. King is an inspiration and a force of nature. She was not a direct scientific mentor, but I can honestly say I continued doggedly on my career path in part because of her belief in me. If someone posts a link to the essay I’d be grateful.

Unlike my landsman @brianbeutler.bsky.social, I am old enough to be on Medicare. It works *so* much better than private insurance. So much less hassle for the patient. So much less overhead paid to insurance cos. So much more straightforward, like VA. Medicare For All (who want it) as the goal.

This outbreak has really captured the public interest (appropriately) and it would be great if Dems attacked Diarrhea Donald on Waterygate.

GIP receptor agonism suppresses inflammation-induced aversion and food intake via distinct circuits

GIP receptor agonism suppresses inflammation-induced aversion and food intake via distinct circuits
Province et al. show that parabrachial CGRP neurons mediate aversion due to interleukin-1β (IL-1β) administration. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) agonism blocks aversion and CGRP activation caused by IL-1β while potentiating its anorectic effect. Dorsal vagal complex GIPR mediates anorexia due to GIPR agonism but may be dispensable for anti-aversion.

The data also reinforce a message that should be clear: American leadership in science and medical research requires far more than getting across the line on top-line budget negotiations and will require continued vigilance to track how HHS treats applications and existing awards.

New work from the lab on how sickness reduces appetite. Turns out, it’s complicated :) We focused on a single inflammatory cytokine, IL-1b, and even that reduces appetite via multiple mechanism. Thanks to Nik Hayes for leading and sticking with this project and to everyone else who contributed!
