I found great joy in reading, thinking about, and writing on a Papal Encyclical, both from the SF and from the technological perspective - and will be talking about it further at the end of the month: codeharbour.co.uk#meetups

We've been getting a lot of questions about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/m...

But updated tech now means OS grid references and decimal lat/longs all now work in modern satnavs or on Google maps. "Plus codes" (e.g. FW97+JRV London) have been in widespread use for years. What's the main benefit of all of these?

Mr Baxter told how Mr Bailey was arrested on meeting his lover at immigration (where authorities watched to destroy gay men). An actor he knew, before even the unequal partial decriminalisation I grew up with, imprisoned for being gay. This evil is still in living memory for some.

Here, Duncan Lawie looks at the latest from Paul McAuley, a novel of climate change which "hits hard because we can see it in the world around us". I kept thinking of Paul March-Russell on EJ Swift as I read this one. A tight little corpus of Brit climate near-futures is forming.

Quote
Ecosystems have undeniably suffered in our lifetimes and Loss Protocol shows that continuing. And yet, carefully written and thoughtful, this book manages to be encouraging. The natural world, and all who care for it, including Winters, are more resilient than we fear.

Rea Irvin’s “Superwoman” comic strip made its first--and last--appearance on June 27, 1943. Following Superman’s debut, National Periodical trademarked the character’s name and was crushing anything it saw as infringement. (How I wish the strip survived! I love details like her bookworm sidekick.)

Nature valentines. Thanks to my Patrons for keeping me drawing www.patreon.com/birdandmoon
A group of six nature valentines. A picture of a bog with pitcher plants, with text saying "Our love is like a bog. Built up over time, resistant to decay, deeply interesting to just a small number of people." A yellow slime mold stretching out and exploring. "our love is like a slime mold. Collaborative, complex, at times unnerving to behold." A piece of limestone with a small trilobite in the corner. "Our love is like limestone. Layered, useful for many purposes, shaped by the friends we met along the way." A ring-billed gull with a french fry on a beach. "Our love is like a ring-billed gull. Abundant, found in North America, sometimes sustained by french fries." An Atlantic horseshoe crab walking on the sand. "Our love is like a horseshoe crab. Tough, timeless, unrelated to true crabs." A drawing of the phosphorus cycle, with arrows connecting various parts of a scene, including algae and fish and a farm and a river and a forest. "Our love is like the phosphorus cycle. Important, really hard to draw."
