Picture reaching for something on a high shelf and coming up short. You don’t give up; instead, you find a stool, carry it over, and climb up. Something remarkable: You held the goal in your mind, identified what you needed, and executed a plan. No training required. www.science.org/content/arti...

Dunno if this is weird or normal, but I don't understand artists or authors who have enough money to never work again who are hardcore about policing their IP rights. For me, IP law is purely a financial protection mechanism. If you blopped $10M on me tomorrow, I'd rights-free everything I've done.

I have an outstanding PhD candidate: very bright, already first author of her first paper, and co-author of two others from my lab. Yet she is not getting a grant because of academic scores. When a system cannot recognize this kind of talent, the system is failing. What can be done?

as a general rule, I believe that when a technology is extremely powerful & its concentration in the hands of an elite would have disastrous consequences, we have nothing less than a moral obligation to try to figure out how to build it in a garage as cheaply as possible for universal distribution

The first single-cell three-dimensional lamprey brain atlas reveals that the vertebrate common ancestor already had a highly regionalized brain, and subsequent neuronal specialization likely drove vertebrate brain diversification. Learn more this week in Science: scim.ag/4whLqXp
As living fossils, lampreys, such as this Far Eastern brook lamprey (Lethenteron reissneri), provide an irreplaceable model for reconstructing the ancestral vertebrate brain. The first single-cell three-dimensional lamprey brain atlas reveals that the vertebrate common ancestor (~500 million years ago) already had a highly regionalized brain, and subsequent neuronal specialization likely drove vertebrate brain diversification.

Well, that was a fucking ride.
A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

Perhaps if industry has particular research needs, they should prioritize and fund research aimed at meeting those needs, rather than expecting academics to do that for them while industry has no skin in the game but is poised to take advantage of positive developments.

A four panel meme showing a scene from the movie Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith. The top shows Anakin Skywalker saying "Happy Revenge of the 5th Padmé". Second shows Padmé saying "But Anakin today is Cinco de Mayo". Third shows Anakin yelling "You turned her against me!". The last panel shows Obi Wan Kenobi standing at the top of a ramp in a spacecraft and edited with balloons, a sombrero, and a mustache.

Extremely normal and fine for a company to put this in a public statement
21. Some cultures have produced vital advances; others remain dysfunctional and regressive. All cultures are now equal. Criticism and value judgments are forbidden. Yet this new dogma glosses over the fact that certain cultures and indeed subcultures . . . have produced wonders. Others have proven middling, and worse, regressive and harmful.

22. We must resist the shallow temptation of a vacant and hollow pluralism. We, in America and more broadly the West, have for the past half century resisted defining national cultures in the name of inclusivity. But inclusion into what?

I often complain that liberal zionists seem to think this, and then Ezra Klein just outright fucking typed it out. *Every* ethnostate is founded on genocidal violence, and the nazis were just a purified exemplar of such; to focus solely on their extermination of Jews ignores the Roma etc.
The comparison of liberal Zionists to Nazis, for instance, is repugnant and not much improved by Piker clarifying that he opposes ethnostates. What made the Nazis notable wasn’t their support for an ethnostate. Ethnostates are common. What made the Nazis notable was their effort to exterminate the Jewish people
