What does it mean to recover from Long Covid? Here in the @bmj.com from a few weeks ago, Charlie Dennis, a final year student and @nisreenalwan.bsky.social write about how we’ve still not got a good definition of this, and that is hampering progress. Link: www.bmj.com/content/393/... #MedSky
Except from BMJ article:

Defining recovery is essential for research, clinical care, and patient experience, say Charlie Dennis and Nisreen A Alwan

If you have long covid, how can you tell if you have fully recovered? Six years of evidence and collective lived experience show us that this is not an easy question to answer. Yet if we do not define recovery, we cannot properly count the number of people living with long covid, and its present and future impact on the population’s wellbeing, economic productivity, and health systems.

Long covid remains a substantial global health problem. A recent report estimated that this condition will cost countries in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) $11bn (£8.3bn; €9.6bn) a year in healthcare costs over the next decade. The projected economic costs are $135bn a year.Second page of article.

I’m genuinely shocked at the people on here who think long covid isn’t real. Seriously? Your actuaries, departments of health even the freaking department of defense know it’s real. Apparently people used to think MS wasn’t real. There’s a long history of telling sick people they’re crazy.

The progression of certain thinkers from denying the validity of trans people to denying the validity of disabilities is a nice illustration of the way in which transphobic habits of mind can quickly evolve into a kind of acquired sociopathy.

I wrote this in the LA Times in 2015, the year before Peter Thiel succeeded in shuttering Gawker. Our colleagues in the corporate press behaved not just shamefully but suicidally in failing to defend Gawker. Rude speech is the ramparts of a free press.
With journalism increasingly controlled by corporate entities that want to avoid offending advertisers and their readers’ sensibilities, we need Gawker most desperately. Maybe the escort story was worth publishing, and maybe not, but it’s a positive thing for our society that Gawker cuts it close. Recent history shows that shameless gossip is good.

On July 6, the Associated Press persuaded a judge to unseal court records in which Bill Cosby admitted to drugging multiple women and having sex with them. The grotesque callousness with which Cosby describes these “relationships” has forever shattered the actor’s genial, gentle, tough-but-fair father-figure image.

Who set Cosby’s downfall in motion? Gawker did.

If you keep seeing people talking about “former NBA star” Royce White and are wondering who he is, he’s a domestic abuser whose ex-wife and son secured a 50-year protective order against him due to domestic violence. He’s also a deadbeat dad. And he played maybe 3 NBA games and never scored a point.
