Super Mario Sunshine is surprisingly more realistic than later Mario games in one specific aspect: here, Mario will start drowning if he hangs on to a ledge in such a way that water is flowing into his nose and mouth, as one would in real life.

Observe Mario holding on to a ledge that water is flowing over in Super Mario Galaxy (left) and Super Mario Odyssey (right). If realistic physics applied, he should start drowning since his nostrils and mouth are covered by water flowing into them.
However, in these games the air depletion/drowning state is tied to the swimming animation. As long as Mario is not visibly swimming, he cannot be drowning even if he is covered by water.
In Super Mario Sunshine, however, air depletion is decoupled from swimming as an action, allowing Mario to realistically start drowning in this situation (note him flashing red and his air meter depleting).
However, he is saved by Sunshine's (also unique among 3D Mario platformers) ledge tiredness mechanic. After hanging on for 20 seconds, Mario will let go. This is also realistic, since why would he let himself drown?

There are a myriad of ways of achieving a codebase that, when compiled, results in the same ROM. LLMs will often bruteforce this process and end up with a result that, while it does compile to the correct ROM, it is not readable or understandable by a human or even the LLM itself.

What these people are unaware of is that getting the game running is basically the first step of the journey and not the end. This is why I argue that as far as recomps go, AI hasn't provided any sort of speedup. Making a barebones recompilation was always easy and required very little time.

Any claims you've seen about AI speeding up this "tedious" process are false when recompilation is involved. We've had multiple instances of human developers being able to get a recomp running in less than a day back when these tools were launched two years ago. A polished result takes much longer.

I still see a lot of confusion about what decompilation, recompilation and ports are and what level of effort is involved in each type of project. It's important that people understand the difference, as recompilation took a drastically different meaning that when it was originally introduced.

Happy to be a gamedev, programmer, team lead, producer who doesn't use genAI or AI tooling, and who doesn't feel reliant on AI to do what I like doing for work. There are folk who believe this is progress, and sure go off, but I don't want to outsource my mind or skills.
