I think that Dolly Parton was, for a lot of people, an ambassador of the "good" values people think of about the South: kindness, hospitality, can-do spirit, sharp and witty and down to earth. I think for a segment of people, too, she was theantithesis of a lot of noxious masculine country stuff.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei quoted Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov on X, saying it aptly described how “America’s extreme reliance on lies has corrupted its foreign policy toward Iran and the region”.

“This passage from Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov aptly describes the situation in which the US system of governance and foreign policy regarding Iran and the region finds itself due to its extreme reliance on ‘lies,’” he said.

“The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others,” he added

Turner tells abortion ‘bozos’ they
can like his TBS show or lump it

ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES — Cable televi-
sion mogul Ted Turner called
anti-abortion activists “bozos” and
said that if anyone doesn’t like his
station’s abortion program with a
pro-choice angle, then tough.

“You bet your bippy we're tak-
ing a position,’’ Turner said
Wednesday of the program Abor-
tion for Survival, to be shown on
his TBS SuperStation on July 20.

Turner told a gathering of tele-
vision writers at the Nationai Ca-

ble Forum that he didn’t try to find spon-

sors for the half-hour show.

“We'll just take a lick for a night. You
know, so it'll cost us four or five hundred

thousand dollars,” he said.

Turner

“I don’t want anybody else telling me
what my daughter’s got to have, or my wife,
or my girlfriend,” Turner said. “We live in.a
free country. There is absolutely
no way that that’s anybody’s busi-
ness but the person that’s in-
volved.”

Turner will broadcast a panel
discussion after Abortion for Sur-
vival, with people on both sides of
the issue. “We'll give the other
bozos a chance to talk back. They
look like idiots anyway.”

And that’s not all, he said. “The
pro-lifers say we don’t want peo-
ple to have sex for fun, only to
have babies. It’s sinful. Sex is sinful,’ Tur-
ner said. “Well, that’s fine if those people
don’t want to ever have sex. Swell. I hap-
pen to enjoy it. I don’t get near as much as
I want to.”

Foes tackle CNN's

Turner on abortion

Associated Press

ATLANTA — Angry abortion oppo-
nents Friday urged media magnate
Ted Turner to quit calling them “bo-
zos” and other names and give their
cause equal time on his cable network.

About 10 people picketed Turner’s
CNN Center in Atlanta to object to
Turner Broadcasting Systems’ planned
cablecast of a documentary, “Abortion
For Survival.” The show, produced
from the point of view of those who
favor a woman’s right to have an abor-
tion, is scheduled to be shown Thurs-
day on Turner’s TBS network.

They also objected to his calling anti-
abortion forces “idiots” and ““bozos” in
a talk with cable operators Wednesday.

The demonstrators demanded that
Turner also program an anti-abortion
documentary, “Eclipse of Reason.”
The film, produced by Dr. Bernard
Nathanson, shows a fetus aborted at 24
weeks.

TBS spokeswoman Kitsie Bassett
Riggall said TBS received a letter from
the National Right to Life requesting

the use of “Eclipse of Reason.”

“Tt is under consideration, but no de-
cision has been made,” she said.

Turner said that after the program,
there would be a debate including Rep.
Robert Dornan, R-Calif., an abortion
foe; Faye Wattleton of Planned Parent-
hood; and Nellie Gray, president of
March for Life.

“We'll give the other bozos a chance
to talk back,” Turner said. “They look
like idiots anyway.”

Georgia Right to Life spokeswoman
Mary Boyert said Friday that the group
thinks Turner has failed in his respon-
sibility to be impartial. They also ob-
jected to his flippant comments.

“Abortion is no joke. Babies are dy-
ing. It doesn’t take much brains to
know that,” Boyert said. “Ted Turner
has thrown down the gauntlet, and we
intend to fight.”

TBS got about 20 calls from viewers
Thursday, about half objecting to
Turner’s comments or the premise of
the abortion program. Spokeswoman
Kirsten White said the volume of calls
about doubled Friday.

Opinion & analysis

Ted Turner deserves the Order of Lenin

This week Ted Turner’s Super
sation (WTBS) will present a Soviet
witprop festival. For his myriad
fforts to advance the evil empire,
*yrner deserves the Order of Lenin,
vith Afghan peasants prostrate.

Scheduled programs include:
Letters From a Deadman” an
xercise in mushroom-cloud hyster-
, produced in the U.S.S.R. (which
vas shown last week, and will be
broadcast several times this
veek); and ‘‘Breaking The Spell”
, ‘frank discussion of U.S./Soviet
ejations’’ by freezenik Carl Sagan,
cather*Theodore Hesburgh, a stal-
yvart of the °60 anti-war movement,
nd Soviet propagandist Georgiy
irbatov. (How’s that for balance? )

Outraged by the broadcast of
\merika,’’ which he termed ‘‘pro-
var,’ Turner ordered executives at

Super Station, which reaches
ato 36 million American homes, to
provide equal time for the Kremlin
iewpoint.

Nor is this Turner’s first venture
nto the wonderful world of advoca-

programming. Late last year,
WTBS treated its viewers to ‘Dark
ircles,”’ a film attacking both the
efense industry and nuclear tech-

nology. The program was so one-
sided that even PBS, which itself
has been guilty of left-wing bias,
refused to air it.

Another contribution to the disar-
mament crusade was “‘A Step Away
From War,” an attack on Strategic
Defense. Tom Shales, liberal TV
critic for the Washington Post,
termed the show “‘badly propagan-
distic.”’

In conjunction with Soviet televi-
sion, Turner is currently producing
a series on ‘good things’’ about the
land of happy slaves. Rumor has it
the series won't include scenes of
KGB interrogation cells, gulags, the
repression of Jewish dissidents, and
Spetsnaz commandos on maneuver
in Afghanistan

With the exception of ‘‘Letters,”’

the aforementioned programs all
were produced by or in cooperation
with The Better World Society, a
group founded and funded by Turn-
er. Arbatov, a member of the Soviet
Central Committee, is on the BWS
Board of Directors.

Turner's evolution from kKnow-
nothing conservative to pliant tool of
the Kremlin dates from a 1982 trip
to Cuba, where he hunted ducks with
Fidel Castro. ‘‘I expected Castro to
be a horrible person,’’ Captain Ted
confided, ‘‘but he was a great guy.”

Give the Soviets this, they are
quick to recognize what Lenin called
a “useful idiot.’’ The budding spe-
cialist on international affairs was
assiduously cultivated by his new
friends.

From the Politburo’s perspective,
the results were most gratifying,
including Turner’s sponsorship of
last Summer's ‘‘Goodwill Games”’ in
Moscow. The goodwill included a
sermonette by Chairman Gorbachev
on Soviet ‘‘peace initiatives,’’ during
the opening ceremonies.

Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in
Media charges Turner and his Cable
News Network deliberately sup-
pressed news of the imprisonment of
dissident Dr. Yuri Medvedkov, dur-
ing the games, so as not to embar-
rass their hosts. For Turner, good-
will toward Marxist thugs
apparently knows no bounds

Despite losing $10 million on the
project, which bombed in the rat-
ings, Turner plans to reprise the
games in Seattle in 1990

Whereas he formerly berated the
networks for their anti-American-
ism, in recent times Ted’s own
views have taken a sharp turn to the
left. ‘Communism is fine with me,”
the media mogul avers. ‘‘It’s part of
life on this planet.’’ So too are
incest, venereal disease and terror-
ism, which is hardly cause to
embrace these afflictions

Turner's a tad more critical of his
own nation. ‘‘We are raping the rest
of the world economically to pay for
this bloated military machine,”’ the
Mouth of the South wails

Our retaliatory raid on Libya,
endorsed even by the likes of Ted
Kennedy, was a terrorist act, In
Turner’s opinion. Captain Outra-
geous summarizes his political phi-
losophy thusly: ‘‘We (America) are
the greatest problem in the world.”’

While Ted fiddles a Slavic tune,
his media empire burns. Due par-
tially to a horrendous miscalculation
in the purchase of MGM, Turner
Broadcasting is sinking under $1.2
billion in debt. A consortium of
cable TV companies has come to the
rescue with new capital, but insisted
their board members have a veto
over ‘‘matters out of the ordinary
business.’

Hopefully, they will cast a critical
eye on Turner’s propaganda pro-
gramming. But not to worry, Ted. If
things get uncomfortable at WTBS,
there’s always an executive suite
waiting for you at Radio Moscow

A TOP Vatican official accused ‘the
American media of persecuting the
Roman Catholic Church over paedophile
priests yesterday, but even as he did so a
Washington Post survey laid bare the
extent of the scandal.

“The US media appears to act with a
fury that reminds me at times of Diocle-
tian and Nero and more recently of Sta-
lin and Hitler,” said Cardinal Oscar
Rodriguez Maradiaga, a Honduran who
is widely tipped as a possible successor
to Pope John Paul.

Most American press coverage of the

recent paedophile scandal was “obvi-
ously and openly anti-Catholic,” he told
the Italian magazine, Trente Giorni, and
accused The New York Times, the Wash-
ington Post, the Boston Globe and Ted
Turner, the founder of CNN, of hound-
ing the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Maradiaga suggested that the
American media were motivated by a
desire to attack the Catholic Church
because it opposes abortion, capital pun-
ishment and euthanasia while support-
ing a Palestinian homeland.

The Post, meanwhile, released an
important survey showing that the num-
ber of priests accused of sex abuse was
much higher than previously disclosed.

It found that 218 Catholic priests from

defrocked.

At least 850 priests have been accused
of sexual misconduct with minors since
the 1960s.

The Post, which said that the actual
figures could be much higher, compiled
the survey by contacting each of Ameri-
ca’s 178 Catholic dioceses. It said that the
Church itself had made no real effort to
conduct a similar survey in order to find

Palestinians have nothing. So

His remarks were last night
condemned by Arie] Sharon’s
government, which called
them “stupid”. Andrea Levin,
director of the American pro-
Israeli media watchdog Cam-

unfortunate choice of words,”
he says, adding that his owner-

Looks like the NSA is pointing at American VPN users and saying “we are so confused, we can’t tell if this internet usage comes from within the United States, better collect to make sure.” Abolish Section 702… From a letter to Tulsi Gabbard from Wyden, Padilla, Markey, Warren, Jacobs & Jayapal:
Although VPNs are often recommended by Federal agencies and advertised as a way to protect a user’s privacy, using a VPN may seriously impact an American’s rights, the members wrote. The U.S. government’s rules for surveillance under Section 702 of FISA and under Executive Order 12333 specify that when the country a user is in is unknown, the government may assume that user is a foreigner. Because foreigners outside of the United States don’t have Fourth Amendment rights, VPNs that hide the country in which a user is located could impact an American’s privacy rights.

“[Americans should] be told if these VPN services, which are advertised as a privacy protection, including by elements of the federal government, could, in fact, negatively impact their rights against U.S. government surveillance,” the members wrote. “To that end, we urge you to be more transparent with the American public about whether the use of VPNs can impact their privacy with regard to U.S. government surveillance, and clarify what, if anything, American consumers can do to ensure they receive the privacy protections they are entitled to under the law and Constitution.”

We’re supposed to believe this is a domestic terrorist attacking ICE with a gun
A photo of the man murdered by ICE today, just before the shooting. He’s standing and holding a phone in his right hand and holding his empty left hand to the sky and looking behind him at a woman running away while an ICE agent closes in on him from the front. On the ground behind the man is a woman that the victim will soon try to help, leading several ICE agents to attack him and pin him to the ground, before shooting him several times.
