#WIPSnips No mention of rice, for reasons discussed in the snip! Substituting the generic category of "Cereal Grains," where Captain Flannigan and protagonist Francis Morgan start their watch and talk about how they miss better food after eighty-three days underway. #SciFi #Writing
White text on a wine-red background, which I've divided into two alt texts.

“As you were,” Flannigan told them all, and they relaxed again. “How’s my ship?” the ‘Little Laker’ asked Francis while she did her hair up into a bun.
“Nothing new to report. We remain on schedule to blueshift into Alpha Centauri at around two bells, and Midshipmen van Rijn and Traversa should get back up here with tea in a minute or two,” Francis replied with a jaunty smile. “The ship is yours, Captain,” she added.
“Thank you, Francis. You slept well?” Captain Flannigan leaned on the console, having an idle look over the readout. The field lines of the warp drive warbled and oscillated in the globe display beside them.
“All right. Was up early. Blueshift watch, I just want to get in to port,” Francis replied, and Jennifer chuckled under her breath.
“I’d tell you not to be impatient, but I can’t really disagree. I want to stretch my legs too. It’s during these long stints that I miss proper bread,” Captain Flannigan admitted, nodding and raising an eyebrow. “But don’t get your hopes up too much, if anything’s happened at Alpha Centauri we might be delayed.” Her accent was out of place in an Acidalian naval captain as well. Captain Flannigan had grown up in the capital of the Democratic Union of the Great Lakes, New York City, and she sounded it. She had not, as Francis had, been trying to consciously embody the archetype of an Acidalian Navy captain since childhood, and so she didn’t, as Francis did, put on a posh Planitian accent. Worse, almost tantamount to blasphemy in fact, was that Flannigan pronounced the word Lieutenant as if she were describing someone who rented a toilet. Francis hummed ruefully, before the Midshipmen got back with tea for everyone.
“Oh, thank you very much Midshipmen. Personally I’d settle for peasemeal brose,” Francis replied, taking a sip of her tea.

#WIPSnips Substituting "wall" for "line," because the Acidalian Intersolar Colonial Navy uses a line of battle doctrine - except, in a three-dimensional system, that line is more like a wall! #SciFi #Writing
White text on a wine red background, which I've divided into two alt texts.

“All right. Pick your targets with the van, Olivia,” Francis commanded, as the Sojourner rolled into orientation with the line of battle. Now that Now that they were protected abaft and afore by the A.S.V. Constantijn van der Linde and A.S.V. Sidhe respectively, she let herself breathe easily again. “This should mop up nicely,” she mused as she gaze out of the quarterdeck windows to their portside. The Sojourner could manage itself in battle alone, but she was most comfortable exactly where she was. That was true of most Acidalian warships, really. Though the aliens still had the numerical advantage even after their losses so far – nineteen remaining warships to the Acidalian line’s twelve ships, eleven and a half really if you considered the Swan Aphetorus’ meagre armament – the Acidalians had the advantage of the stronger position and formation.
The aliens’ vessels were also, on average, smaller. In terms of weight class, two thirds of the Acidalian line were in fact ships of the line. The alien fleet was almost double the number, but it had nowhere near double the firepower, being almost two thirds composed of the little corvettes. The smaller ships in the Acidalian line – which wasn’t saying much when there were only three frigates present, and five third-rates – busied themselves by picking off corvettes and badly damaged alien frigates one by one, while the Constantijn and her heaviest companions sent volley after volley of long gun fire into the sides of the aliens’ two remaining cruisers.
“Looks like those cruisers are trying to bug out, Commander,” Lieutenant Dimitrijević noted, frowning at the view out the window and at the master display. “Their escorts are moving to cover their escape, but I don’t fancy their odds of getting out of there without a large helping of the Constantijn’s ammunition being shoved up their backsides,” he said.

I know people who are gender critical. The whole argument is so polarised that to some people the fact that she’s gender critical means she might as well be a murderer, which is just nonsense. There are people with genuine concerns, and they need to be discussed. Where is the debate?”

This is such a good policy because we’re not building the network from scratch. It’s already there and just needs upgrading. We used to build trains and rolling stock ourselves, and we could do it again creating high paid, skilled jobs. It doesn’t need to stack up commercially. It’s the government.

#WIPSnips "Injury," where not only is the word used to describe damage to Sojourner, but Post Captain Flannigan is injured in battle over Alpha Centauri! #Writing #SciFi
White text on a wine-red background. I've split it into two alt texts.

“Incoming!”
“Brace for impact!” Francis called out, a split second before the missile struck the Sojourner’s mizzenhull. It was a simple fact that the mizzenhull couldn’t be very well protected; you couldn’t put much in the way of ammunition in such close proximity to the reactors and engines safely. But they couldn’t turn to face their aft away without exposing it even more first!
The missile exploded.
The whole ship lurched off course, and the engines died. Captain Flannigan yelped as she fell off balance, her grip on the rail failing as she hit the master display and crumpled onto the deck. Francis almost lost her footing herself, and those who were seated at controls almost teetered off their chairs.
“Captain!” Francis yelled, darting over to Flannigan’s side. Captain Flannigan groaned, struggling to get up. That on its own caught Francis’ attention – Flannigan had grown up in full Earth gravity, ordinarily she was downright springy in the Navy’s standard artificial gravity of only 3.8m/s squared. Francis looped a hand under the woman’s armpit and helped her up. “Captain, are you all right?” she asked urgently, her attention split between her commanding officer and their situation. With the engines dead, they were starting to overshoot the convoy. Flannigan almost fell over again, and caught herself on the rail this time.
“Ough- owww,” Flannigan mumbled, putting her free hand to her head. There was a cut on her brow, which was just starting to bloom blood. She stumbled again, and Francis caught her.

#WIPSnips "Guard," which I've substituted for "cover" because it's used to mean the same here. The A.S.V. Sojourner, with Francis having taken command after Captain Flannigan was concussed, covers the evacuation of the wrecked B.Q.V. Canid Romulus during battle over Alpha Centauri! #Writing #SciFi
White text on a wine red background. Alt text part one.

“Quarterdeck, you’ve got an engine!” Lieutenant Malloye reported over the comm, her voice thick with exertion. “Just the central cone’s operational, any more and we’ll cook ourselves!” she informed them.
“Excellent work Lieutenant! One engine’s better than none, get us fully braked so we can cover the lifeboats Mister Medved!” Francis exclaimed, and punched the air gladly. Medved urgently prodded the spluttering engine into life, and Francis braced herself as the Sojourner came to a sharp halt in relation to the collapsing tanker. Thankfully, said tanker was still floating toward the line of battle, it just wasn’t getting any faster about it. Its heading had, however, been jolted off course by the impact, and it was in an uncontrolled spin. From the aft bulk of the Romulus, where most of its habitable compartments where, its lifeboats began to extend on their davits to get clear of the ship. “Flip and roll, Kruno! Open the boat bay doors the moment we’re in position. Lieutenant Ecclestone, dorsal broadside, fire as she bears!” Francis roared.
The thrusters fired and, in one graceful motion, the Sojourner did a somersault, pointing her vulnerable aft away from the battle, and the ship rolled around its keel as she went. When the thrusters fired again to arrest their spin, the enemy was right over all of their heads.
“Do your worst,” Francis growled up at the quarterdeck ceiling.
The blasts of the guns flashed around the windows of the deck as the culverins tilted straight up. Far ahead of them, the Persistence completed its braking burn and, now that it had found its place in the line of battle, turned to join the broadside. An evil little grin grew on Francis’ face. They were drawing closer and closer to a unified formation, more of the convoy were past the line to safety.

#NZpol Saw this excellent quote-reply to Simeon Brown’s latest attack on Labour. Worth sharing.
David Peez @RebelEkonomista

"The truck driver in Pakuranga helps pay off a lawyer's loan." No, Simeon. He doesn't. Not a cent.

When the government lends a student money, it creates the dollars and credits their account. No tradie's tax was collected and posted to a law degree. When the graduate repays, those dollars are deleted, drained back out like tax. They don't land in the truck driver's pocket either.

So nobody foots the bill. The worker and the graduate aren't on opposite sides of a ledger. Setting them against each other is the trick, and it runs on the same myth as "add it to the tab", that the government is a household counting coins. It issues the currency. The real limits are real resources and inflation, not a truck driver's tax bill.

"Someone always pays." Sure. Just never the person you keep pointing at.

#WIPSnips A snippet from the second chapter of Ghost of Hades' draft, as the frigate A.S.V. Sojourner - under Post Captain Jennifer Flannigan and protagonist Lieutenant Commander Francis Morgan - arrives, after a delay, for battle in Alpha Centauri. #Writing #SciFi
Text on a wine red background. It is too long for alt text, so I've divided it between this and a reply of the same image. The text reads as follows.

“Lieutenant Ecclestone, get those culverins ready,” Francis ordered. Lieutenant Olivia Ecclestone was their master gunner, and Fifth Lieutenant. Her gun crews below decks had been ready to fire ever since they’d gone to warp speed again. “Hold your fire until we’re in effective firing range, we don’t want to hit our convoy,” she said.
“Yes ma’am,” Ecclestone confirmed. A great rumbling sounded through the hull as the guns responded to her command, shifting on their swivels ever so slightly.
“Admiral Beecham for you Captain!” Merryn called.
“Put him on!” Captain Flannigan replied, while she examined the master display sternly.
“Captain Flannigan, nice to have you with us!” the voice of Admiral Beecham said gladly.
“Nice to be here. My apologies for our delayed arrival, we got beached in the outer system. How’s the fight going, Admiral?” Flannigan asked, taking up her microphone again just as two alien corvettes went up in flames in the distance almost simultaneously. The flash of light shone through the windows, and Francis watched their LIDAR signatures on the display break up. Both well-aimed shots had been courtesy of the A.S.V. Alacrity’s long guns, one of the two Veracity class third-rates in the line of battle. “I see Piper’s doing well today,” the Captain added wryly. Post Captain Liam Piper commanded the Alacrity.

“He is. The fight goes well, but we’ve got to get that convoy out of there and behind the wall with the rest of the civilians,” Beecham concurred.
