Develops medical laboratory software. Emphasis on medical billing. Former Treasury VP (risk mgmt stuff) at ridiculously global bank, gave that up when I figured out they ignored risk management.

It may seem like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but I'd argue that "trunk or treat" represents American society's greatest failure.

To quote from the World Bank, where I get these prices: "Metals were broadly stable, increasing 0.4%." Burry's already short AI, but it'll be a while before he collects. He's a public figure now, it'll be interesting to see if he can hold up under the pressure of everyone pointing & laughing.

Updated my stupid simple macro model. CO2 is still trending sharply lower, but once again metals made a new high. I went looking to see the last time this happened. 2007, sure enough. From the time the sell signal finally came until things truly collapsed was more than a year that time.

Sir Ian McKellen orates 'The Stranger's Case' from 'Sir Thomas More' by Shakespeare about the Evil May Day xenophobic riot of 1517 in London. This passage was written 400 years ago, but times never change. Humanity refuses to change its unwarranted bias against 'others'.

Bonds got a bad beating after I posted this. NVDA faded, but still closed higher. Kind of sure they'll breakout when they report earnings next month, but that's a lifetime away. Crude is still looking weak. That weakness may have an expiration date though: Nov 4. As always, the mad king is a risk.

But you can never use it for any transaction that takes any amount of time to settle, because you can't hedge the currency risk. Cryptonomicon proposed gold as a base for a digital currency, and that would have worked. BTC took the limited supply part of gold but forgot the rest of how gold worked.
000
labsoftwaredev.bsky.social @labsoftwaredev.bsky.social · 17h
So it can't ever really be used as a regular, normal part of international transactions. It can't be used because no one can hedge out the currency risk, and if you can't do that it's impractical to use. So that leaves speculation, and the occasional cross-border use for instant transfer of money.

The central banks who lend it out base their rate on their own currency's money market rate, or some similar rate. Any commodity does this: copper miners sell their copper forward and receive back money in some currency minus the rate they are charged. BTC is neither a currency nor a commodity.
100
labsoftwaredev.bsky.social @labsoftwaredev.bsky.social · 17h
It doesn't have that because it doesn't have a money market to base that forward market on. There's no vehicle that will pay you interest in BTC terms who's rate you can then use to underpin a forward market. Gold has this: central banks regularly lend it out, and miners use it to sell gold forward.
100
labsoftwaredev.bsky.social @labsoftwaredev.bsky.social · 17h
I listened to that, and here's the fundamental problem: it's not a currency, and it's not a commodity. Any major currency used in international transactions will have a forward market. That grows naturally out of its use as an international medium of exchange. BTC doesn't have that.

What is the value prop of BTC or ETH, other than as a money laundering scheme? Given all the hacks, I can't fathom a reason why anyone trusts these things. Gold in your backyard is more useful & safe. I mean, the dog's not gonna dig it up cuz he can't eat it.

This is pure profiteering of course, but it's also down to anthropomorphizing AI. It's not a person. It doesn't think. It's a machine, it will do what you tell it, & unless your thoughts are always perfect it will go off & do weird things in odd places, and you won't find out until it's too late.

Not surprising that it seems bosses at most companies think AI "automates" software development. It does not. If you try to make it automate it, you will fail, horribly. It's one thing to code something for home use, another thing entirely to try to foist half-baked solutions on a real business.

Only if you're not using the extra time it gives you to test. Testing, and a good test plan, is always the differentiator. AI makes no difference there. That's on you, the human.

You're bringing back a funny memory. I took an English class in college where we had to analyze a poem once a week, and no matter how long it was I did it in one page, got an A anyway. Prof assigned a real long one, don't remember anymore which it was, and bet me I couldn't in one page. I lost.

Closer to railroad, but not as transformative. Most of the overhyped stuff will die away, but speeding up coding time for software development and making it more reliable, assistance in new drug development, likely a few other places where it can assist, will remain.

One saving grace: Obamacare only exists because he (correctly) ruled a part of it was a tax. The rest of his legacy is ass though. At best. He was always firmly against the VRA, and I have not been surprised he has enshrined in law his life's work of destroying it.

Newt, to quote Charles Pierce, is “a dumb person’s idea of a smart person.” Lucky is a weirdo, beardo, & a fatty. Musk lost a battle of wits against two pop-tarts and a toaster!
The Time Elon Musk Hurt Himself Trying to Eat Pop-Tarts

Space journalist Eric Berger's 2021 book Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX includes an anecdote from one of Musk's colleagues in the extraterrestrial exploration industry in which Musk encounters worthy adversaries at his hotel's breakfast bar - a packet of Pop-Tarts and a typical toaster.

“Elon comes down, and he walks over to the breakfast bar and he picks up a package of Pop-Tarts," the man recalled. "He was transfixed. This was like a scene out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, when the apes examine the monolith. It was clearly the most fascinating thing he had seen that morning"

When Musk finally realized that Pop-Tarts are best prepared toasted, he took the package to the toaster and inserted the two pastries into the slots - horizontally. After the Pop-Tarts were done cooking, instead of doing literally anything else, Musk dug his fingers in between the grates to get the treats that were out of reach, screaming "Fuck, it burns!
Fuck, it burns!" at the top of his lungs.

🫁 Next time, just get a muffin.

Crude oil looks like it's peaked for the now. It's certainly acting like it. Combined with NVDA looking like it desperately wants to break out, it could be we're looking at a blowoff AI top. Bonds are kind of due for a relief rally too, that would be the direction of fear in that market. We'll see.
