Ratio of SPX to SPXEW, which is the equal weight S&P. Cap weighted, the one everyone tracks, is up there to where it was just before the GFC, yet another echo of that time. As of this morning, SPX is up, SPXEW is down for the day. Happens a lot.
Point and figure graph showing SPX over SPXEW ratio is at the same level it was before the 2008 GFC.This morning, SPX is up, SPXEW is down.

This is the correlation between the YOY change in the CPI ex food/energy, and the price of WTI, going back to 1986, which is when FRED's WTI series begins. There's a one year lag in the effect a change in oil prices has on inflation. This is why Trump's goose is cooked.

Breaking bad, from Almost Daily Grant's:
“Something always breaks,” warns John Rocque, head of technical analysis at 22V research. Rocque refers to the unruly recent price action in Treasurys, with the 10-year yield topping 5.2% this morning versus 4.8% three weeks ago and 4.6% in early August.

Over the past five decades, that benchmark rate has experienced similarly violent upward moves on 16 occasions, with some sort of financial disruption – ranging from the Silicon Valley Bank’s 2023 implosion to the Black Monday stock market swan dive of 1987 – reliably following suit. “As sure as day follows night, when the 10-year yield rises [like this], something gets knocked out,” Rocque commented on CNBC. “It just pays to be cautious.”

Still and all, an adventurous spirit predominates in the high-yield primary market. Nine deals totaling more than $17 billion (headlined by double-B-plus-rated SoftBank’s $10 billion offering) priced over the four days through Thursday, marking the busiest week in a year. There’s plenty more where that came from, as double-B-rated Paramount prepares a $44 billion package of investment-grade and junk debt backing its acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery by early next week, according to Bloomberg. Though option-adjusted spreads on the ICE BofA High Yield Index remain within 20 basis points of their cyclical nadir at 280 basis points, marginal credits are making increasingly heavy weather of it. The triple-C-rated portion of that gauge settled yesterday at a 1,112- basis point pickup, up 200 basis points from May to approach the 1,137-basis point peak logged during the April 2025 Liberation Day panic.

With investors and Federal Reserve policymakers in broad agreement that last week’s rate hike will soon have company, “the bill from the cheap-money era is landing on the weakest balance sheets first,” Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk wrote today. “The pain is sharpest in heavily levered, private equity-backed technology, healthcare and consumer discretionary names, where floating-rate debt, thin margins and AI disruption risk leave little room to absorb years of elevated borrowing costs.”

Those put-upon ranks could soon expand, as 16.8% of Moody’s-rated, speculative-grade firms sport a B3 (the equivalent of a single-B-minus) rating alongside a negative outlook. That’s well above the long-term average of 14.3%.With a slew of debt maturities looming in 2028 and 2029 (a sum equivalent to 31% of the sub-investment grade total through 2036), weaker credits increasingly receive the cold shoulder. Ba-rated borrowers account for 31% of new issuance this year, up from 19% in 2025, with the share of B-rated firms commensurately shrinking to 50% from 62%. “Caa1 and lower deals, meanwhile, are not getting done at all,” Moody’s analysts wrote Monday, concluding thus: “late-cycle signals are becoming harder to ignore.”

Inflation update, via Kroger results, from Almost Daily Grant's. Money quote (literally): "General Mills disclosed that its spending on logistics has ballooned by 40% year-over-year, thanks in part to skyrocketing diesel prices (hat tip: Adam Josephson at Sakonnet Research)."
Food fight! Kroger Co. took a red pen to its revenue outlook this morning, guiding full-year same store sales growth (excluding fuel) to 0.5% at the midpoint, down from a prior 1.5% outlook and the Street’s 1.3% guesstimate.

Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery store by sales after Walmart and Costco, is working to bolster its market share by “investing in price to show value to an inflation-squeezed consumer,” as Evercore ISI analyst Greg Melich puts it. Yet with scaled back SNAP benefits and elevated fuel costs piling pressure on household budgets, shoppers “are buying more on need,” CEO Greg Foran relayed on the earnings call.

On that score, imminent relief will be hard to come by. As Bloomberg points out, the likes of Conagra Brands, McCormick and Campbell’s have recently detailed plans to raise prices in the coming months to help offset bulging costs. Earlier this week, General Mills disclosed that its spending on logistics has ballooned by 40% year-over-year, thanks in part to skyrocketing diesel prices (hat tip: Adam Josephson at Sakonnet Research).

“There are effectively no major cost sources where [food companies] have seen relief,” Ricky Volpe, professor of agricultural economics at California Polytechnic State University, told Bloomberg today. “A lot of major retailers and manufacturers and wholesalers have been eating it a little bit, seeing their margins decrease a little bit and trying to keep prices low – but that can’t last forever.”

With Yemen in the news this morning, my fave historical incident that should be a movie. Someone needs to do a Hollywood epic on this.
Imam Ahmad bin Yahya inherited the Yemeni throne in 1948.[17] In 1955, Iraq-trained Colonel Ahmad Thalaya led a revolt against him. A group of soldiers under his command surrounded the royal palace of Al Urdhi at Taiz—a fortified stronghold where the Imam lived with his harem, that also housed the royal treasure, an arsenal of modern weapons, and a contingent of 150 palace guards—and demanded that Ahmad abdicate. Ahmad agreed, but demanded that his son, Muhammad al-Badr, succeed him. Thalaya refused, preferring the king's half-brother, the Emir Saif el Islam Abdullah, the 48-year-old foreign minister. While Abdullah began forming a new government, Ahmad opened the country's coffers and secretly began buying off the Thalaya's soldiers. After five days, the number of soldiers besieging the palace was reduced from 600 to 40. Ahmad then came out of the palace, wearing a devil's mask and wielding a long scimitar, terrifying the besiegers. He slashed two sentries dead before exchanging the sword for a sub-machine gun and leading his 150 guards onto the roof of the palace to begin a direct attack on the rebels. After 28 hours, 23 rebels and 1 palace guard were dead, and Thalaya gave up. Abdullah was later reported executed, and Thalaya was publicly decapitated.[18]

Just saw it & read up about it. This to me was the punchline though. I mean, the only thing keeping his lungs together must have been the tar from the cigars:
Morgan was an avid smoker of cigars, favouring a comically large kind of Cuban cigar called a Meridiana Kohinoor (also nicknamed “Hercules’ Clubs”). Towards the end of his life, Morgan’s doctor pleaded with him to cut down on his smoking habit for the sake of his health. After this meeting, Morgan reluctantly agreed to limit himself to only 20 cigars a day.

Finance ended the week with quite a bang when it comes to "innovation", it seems. From Almost Daily Grant's:
From the ever-bulging financial innovation files: Coinbase Global announced yesterday it has filed paperwork with the SEC seeking permission to offer single-stock perpetual futures in the U.S. Pending the regulatory green light, American punters can soon place leveraged wagers on individual names around the clock, without actually owning (or shorting) any equity. Back in late May, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved Kalshi’s petition to feature so-called perps tracking bitcoin, while Coinbase rolled out the single-stock derivatives for international customers that same month.

Speculators outside the 50 states can broaden their horizons beyond cash equities, as Polymarket debuted dozens of perpetual contracts yesterday offering up to 20 times leverage. The prediction market, which promised the “deepest liquidity [and] lowest fees” in a social media post, offers wagers tracking the likes of Apple, as well as Brent crude and Fartcoin, though the contracts will trade offshore and are unavailable to U.S. investors (sorry, Warren Buffett). An avatar of today’s freewheeling financial age, meanwhile, ruffles some noteworthy feathers with its latest offering. Thus, Robinhood Markets – which famously declares a “mission to democratize finance for all” – offers tokenized, blockchain-based exposure to nearly 200 single-name equities and ETFs for non-U.S. investors, including AMC Entertainment.

Adam Aron, CEO of the movie theater chain turned 2021-era meme stonk extraordinaire, let his thoughts be known via a Thursday X post, which read in part: “I find this practice to be contemptible, outrageous, disgusting, detestable, inexcusable, vile.” Asked by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev to explain his concern, Aron replied that “the list of concerns is almost existential . . . Your stock token pretend[s] to be some form of stock ownership, but disclosures to the contrary notwithstanding, they are not ownership and they deprive investors of their rights.”

A feature, not a bug, perhaps.

SP500 corp bond index has recovered all its losses from 2022. It's been dancing on either side of its 100 day ma. One of the things I'm watching. Two problems here: 1 - if rates need to rise, we know Warsh is useless. 2 - if rates do rise, all that AI debt is going to look a LOT less attractive.
Chart of the S&P corp bond index. It's sitting at more or less the same level as it was right before diving in 2022 as the Fed raised rates.
We know this time Warsh isn't raising no matter what. There will be chaos at the Fed if the committee decides to go against him and raise rates. Between that and the AI debt overhang, things could get real dicey real fast.

The end of the Civil War, or the nation that once was, and could be again, if we rid ourselves of our ridiculously bloated military, not to mention ICE, DHS, and a host of other useless parasites who do nothing but endanger us with their faux martial bullshit.
As a fitting close to this long and terrible struggle which the country had passed through, a grand review of the two armies of Grant and Sherman took place in the National Capital on the 23d and 24th, of May in the presence of the President and Cabinet, and foreign Ministers. As the bronzed and proud veterans marched up Pennsylvania Avenue, the heavens resounded with the acclamations of the multitude, and the air was filled with bouquets of flowers that were rained on th« noble leaders. The Duke of Wellington said, when 50,000 troops were reviewed in the Champs Elysees, after the occupation of Paris by the Allies, that it was "a sight but once seen in a life time; " but here nearly two hundred thousand marched in an apparently endless stream past the Presidential mansion, not conscripts forcedinto the ranks, but citizens, who had voluntarily taken np arms to defend not a monarch's rights, but their own.

Yet, sublime as was this spectacle, it sunk into insignificance before the grandeur of the one presented a few days after, when this army, strong enough to conquer a hemisphere, melted suddenly away into the mass of the people and was seen no more. Its deeds of renown had filled the civilized world, and European statesmen looked on and wondered what disposition could be made of it, and where it would choose to go, or what it would do. It was one of the grandest armies that ever bore on its bayonet points the destinies of a king or a nation — a consolidation and embodiment of power seldom witnessed; and yet, while the gaze of the world was fixed upon it, it disappeared like a vision, and when one looked for it he saw only peaceful citizens engaged in their usual occupations. The Major-General whose mar-tial achievements had been repeated in almost every language under the sun, was seen amid his papers in his old law office, which he had left at the call of his country — the brave Colonel, who had led many a gallant charge, was in his counting house, acting as though he had been absent only a few days on business, while the veterans of the rank and file, whose battle shout had rung over scores of bloody fields, could only be found by name as one bent over his saw and plane, and another swung his scythe in the harvest field, or plied his humble toil along the streets. It was a marvelous fiigit, the grandest the world ever saw. It had been the people's war — the people had carried it on, and having finished their own work, quietly laid aside the instruments with which they had accomplished it, and again took up those of peaceful industry.Never did a Government on earth exhibit such stability, and assert its superiority over all other forms, as did this Republican Government of ours, in the wgy its armies disappeared when the struggle was over.

The bond market is gradually pricing AI hyperscalers at a discount to the rest of the corporate bond market. Via Almost Daily Grant's:
“Investors are selling hyperscaler bonds today for the same reason people sell one house before buying another – they need to free up capital,” John Lloyd, portfolio manager at Janus Henderson, told Bloomberg. “The difference is that hyperscaler bonds are already abundant, and most portfolios are well stocked.”

That dynamic drives an eye-catching divergence, as the aforementioned quintet are now trading roughly 60 basis points cheap versus average investment grade spreads of the same credit rating and maturity, BofA’s Seliger relays. That’s “by far the widest” among the 29 component categories tracked by the bank.

Does that incremental pickup present adequate compensation for the attendant risks? Hyperscaler capital expenditures registered at about 25% of sales last year, up from 11.3% in 2020 and 7.6% in 2015 (“Check-writing contest,” Grant’s Interest Rate Observer, July 4, 2025). This year, that ratio is projected to balloon to more than 38%. Capex will virtually match Oracle’s top line over the 12 months through November, if sell-side consensus is on the beam, while aggregate free cash flow from Amazon, Meta and Google will sink to minus $80 billion next year, analysts at JPMorgan predict, versus positive $125 billion in 2025.

Of course, those heroic outlays could, ultimately, generate attractive returns for shareholders. As for creditors, you only get par.

It was a desperate gamble to prevent Vicksburg from making the defeat of the South inevitable. By losing both on July 4, 1863, the South lost the war. That should have ended it, but Davis and Lee were dead enders, and sacrificed tens of thousands more men on a hopeless war. Sherman's verdict:
The value of the capture of Vicksburg, however, was not measured by the list of prisoners, guns, and small-arms, but by the fact that its possession secured the navigation of the great central river of the continent, bisected fatally the Southern Confederacy, and set the armies which had been used in its conquest free for other purposes; and it so happened that the event coincided as to time with another great victory which crowned our arms far away, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. That was a defensive battle, whereas ours was offensive in the highest acceptation of the term, and the two, occurring at the same moment of time, should have ended the war; but the rebel leaders were mad, and seemed determined that their people should drink of the very lowest dregs of the cup of war, which they themselves had prepared.

The best of times, the worst of times
It is possible for a country to worry itself into irrelevance. But America is an experiment in terrifying yourself to riches. Predictions of total and irreversible change certainly have their uses: there is no stronger pitch to investors than claiming your business will end the world as we know it. That said, an economy which combines widespread distrust of business with a growing elite millenarianism is also a combustible one. Perhaps the danger is not 2008, 1999, 1973 or even 1873, but 1789.

From Almost Daily Grant's. It does appear the SpaceX IPO is draining money out of crypto. I guess there really is only so much sucker, I mean speculative, money out there.
With other markets in melt-up mode (until today, at least), might the crypto revolution be yesterday’s news? Spot bitcoin ETFs absorbed 13 consecutive daily outflows through Wednesday according to SoSoValue, the longest losing streak since the products’ January 2024 inception.

Notably, perhaps, the speculative migration towards greener pastures commenced prior to this latest leg lower. Total spot trading volume on centralized digital asset exchanges registered at just $679 billion in April, per a Friday report from blockchain analytics firm Cryptoquant, easily the lowest monthly total since fall 2023 and a fraction of the $2 trillion logged last October. That downshift came despite constructive price action, as bitcoin advanced from $68,000 to $76,000 over those 30 days.

Industry players likewise look to branch out. Yesterday, Coinbase rolled out perpetual futures contracts tied to SpaceX, providing speculators the means to wager on Elon Musk’s corporate progeny without actually owning any shares, ahead of the rocket-cum-satellite-cum-AI entity’s scheduled IPO next week. “This is a new asset class, built for this era of markets,” declared Coinbase head of derivatives Liz Martin.

On that score, bulls and bears can surely agree.
