Publishers and Editors! I'm taking subs for Vol. 3 of the award-nominated "Best Weird Fiction of the Year" til end of the year. Writers! You'll get a chance to submit your 2026 stories in January. bestspecfic(at)gmail.com

Esteemed Editors and Publishers,

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Publishers and editors are encouraged to send electronic or digital copies, via the email address below. (I am not accepting hard copy submissions.) ePubs are preferred, but I will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or PDF. Please do not cherry-pick selections. Send the entire book, journal, or magazine to:

bestspecfic@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

Warm Wishes,

Michael

Robyn Skyrme @skyrmerobyn.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
My first novel Old Owl and Matt is on sale now — £13.50 + s/h to pre-order from Book Works. bookworks.org.uk/publishing/s...
Front cover: Deep green background, an illustration of what looks like trees at sunset. Title 'Old Owl and Matt' in bold bright yellow all-caps, centred. At the top, author name 'Robyn Skyrme' in the same bright yellow. Below, in white, publisher name 'Book Works'Back cover. Solid bright yellow background. Text in deep green, serif.

‘The world was getting dark, and they willed it on. After a wrong turn, a bad guess, they walked a road familiar to neither of them.’

Will and Jay haven’t slept for days. After meeting at a party, they’ve gone back to Will’s flat where they can chat and kiss and fuck forever—but something else happens. In the aftermath of what he believes to be a haunting, and troubled by the memory of a radio show from his childhood, Will lands in America and embarks on an all-consuming journey. The first novel from poet Robyn Skyrme, Old Owl and Matt is a queer road trip through memory, grief and magic.

‘The heart of Old Owl And Matt is big and warm and generous, and filled with a smudged kind of purity that is always endearing, sometimes sublime. But nothing is just heart. The body of this novel is by turns terrifying, sensual, ecstatic, disturbing, and its mystery unravels and re-ravels. It clouds and clears like the surface of a lake. The storytelling is entirely engaging, and it is one of those books that feels like a companion, a friend, a presence.’ – Keith Ridgway, author of Dooneen and A Shock

‘Robyn Skyrme’s debut novel reflects a talent long on display in his poetry: an electrifying precision with emotion, place and meaning, and the desire to wield it in powerful, discomforting ways. As a book that’s both queer and ghostly, Old Owl and Matt prioritises complexity over comfort, and through his compelling storytelling Skyrme lets us sit with pain and loss in all its shapes, offering us almost euphoric glimpses of hope and joy within the cold landscape of grief.’ – Huw Lemmey, author of Unknown Language

The Salt King by Natasha Pulley
Jesuit priest Avelyn Brocken was born into a mining family in Hreodwater, a small, isolated salt town in England. At 16, after a mining disaster killed his family, he fled. When a fellow priest is miraculously healed only to then be turned to salt after a visit to Hreodwater, Avelyn is sent to investigate. When he arrives, the town’s doctor, Jericho, tells him that the priest is not the only one experiencing strange cures—and may not be the only one in danger from a substance in the mine that the locals call “salt light.”
