must be mad being an F1 engineer and giving someone a chance in an F1 car and they're just like "oh my god everything about this is incredible it is the most beautiful thing I've ever driven" talking about the same car the regular drivers called an undriveable piece of shit six months ago

The threat of the far right is understood through the lens of neo Nazi skinheads: minorities and marginal types will face violence, but as a member of the majority who is politically and culturally normal, I will never feel the ill effects of their rule and it will at least make the wokes go away.

On the late, great, Steve Cropper who most people probably remember from the backing band in The Blues Brothers. The HBO documentary on Stax Records (currently on NOW TV) is well worth watching both to understand his contribution and why, to me at least, America is such a strange place.
Numerous classic songs bear his imprint, not just as session player but also co-writer and arranger. That's him getting bluesy alongside Booker T's famous organ riffs on "Green Onions". The shimmering guitar in Otis Redding's "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" is him. So are the choppy rhythms and fleet-fingered licks in Sam and Dave's "Soul Man", a masterclass in economy and drive.

Unlike the axe-twirling virtuosi surrounding him in the greatest-ever lists, Cropper considers himself a rhythm rather than lead guitarist. His nickname is "the Colonel". In the US army, that would make him the highest-ranking field officer, on the frontline rather than among the glory-seeking top brass. There's no exhibitionism in his musicianship. Service to the song is what matters.
