Abolish frat culture
On “The Good Guy With the Text” fallacy
by Bess Kalb

“Raise the son who gets the Cornell ‘free pussy’ group text and calls the cops,” was a version of the viral post that took hold of all my algorithms yesterday.

Sure. Yes. Of course.

But. Bear with me when I say: This is a breathtaking fallacy. This is the “I’m With Her” liberal version of the good guy with a gun fantasy. And this is going to be uncomfortable for anyone with a kid in a fraternity to hear: If your son finds himself in a group that would send a “free pussy” text, it’s too late. The group is the disease, the text is the symptom.

If the imagined Hero Son in this scenario is receiving this text, written out, in writing, by one of his friends, he is part of the insidious chokehold of college rape culture. And he will be in the same position as all 57 men who got the message and did nothing. Not because they ultimately stayed silent after wrestling with the horror of this grotesque misogyny from one of their brothers. Because they thought it was fucking funny and were fucking stoked.

For the record: The University of California has never asked me for anything like this. But I am seeing this line of questioning arising in a rapidly growing number of American contexts. It has been asked of me, personally, elsewhere. And that is very, very alarming.

I wrote this piece in part because, while most of my friends had seemingly heard about "AI agents going rogue" (not an accurate description), most didn't know that the US almost started a war with China over false info generated by an AI product. organizingmythoughts.org/what-actuall...
“It was not a rogue system exercising some terrifying new form of agency that almost led us to war with China, but the outsourcing of human thought and labor to a machine that lacks human competence and discernment. Our greatest fear should not be that the machines will declare war on us, but that we will declare war on each other, or otherwise throw the world away, because we have surrendered the interrogation of reality to machines—which, as it happens, don’t work especially well.” - Kelly Hayes

The fast-moving narratives around AI are head-spinning by design. Here's my take on what you need to know right now.

What Actually Matters About AI Right Now
A war almost began, not because a machine wanted something or “went rogue,” but because a machine was wrong, and human beings believed it.

The idea that we are fundamentally averse to the idea that machines can think is BS. Human beings are actually very much inclined to believe machines can think. Our sci-fi sense of wonder is being exploited by charlatans. We do not accept PR and propaganda that are wholly unsupported by the facts.

"Tiny as that moment of self-recognition in the cab was, it felt like part of a subtle shift I’ve been undergoing with age. Recently, while organizing a few Maybe Baby archival digs, forced to reread a lot of my old writing, I was struck by the repetitive nature of the topics—how the gestalt of my archive seemed to reveal something truer about me than the individual pieces, however personal. My knee-jerk response was to regard this pattern with judgement (I’m a tedious person wandering in circles!), then to defend it as “the point” (life is cyclical; returning to old lessons with new angles is the whole deal), and only later did I encounter a less defensive affection for it (haha, there I am). This final turn felt invigorating; novel. In the cab I felt the same spark."

Karen Bass reelection update: the mayor has come out as anti-taco stand. In Los Angeles.
“I do not believe that you should have a food vendor in front of a restaurant, period,” Bass shot back, adding that she wanted them off the streets completely and in brick-and-mortar locations. Their presence near restaurants “discourages people from going in, just like you shouldn’t have encampments in front of restaurants or in front of schools. You just should not do that.”
