Infrastructure determines behaviour, making some things easy/natural and others hard/weird. Municipal elections are on now in #bcpoli. Vote for candidates supporting more neighbours & more sociable public spaces. Fewer cars littering streets and more sidewalks, bike lanes, bus bulges and plazas.

My design research workshops are now trauma centers because everyone has been so gd gaslit. It is dehumanizing and abusive to hire someone explicitly for their expertise and ritualistically demean and dismiss it.

It's worth noting that in the olden days (like, 15 years ago) areas like White Rock/South Surrey, the Tri-Cities, or Ridge Meadows had 5-15 reporters solely dedicated to local community news. There was a business model that supported that, and it's a huge issue that no longer exists.

I am (unfortunately) the perfect audience for this 2-hour video on the effects of cruising, but it was interesting to see comments online that cruises can be accessible getaways for wheelchair users and in some cases more cost effective than assisted care for seniors.

Via Steven Sater’s Instagram, just connecting the dots now between Gavin Creel, the friend whose death Sara Bareilles writes about in Good Grief, and Duncan Sheik, who died on Sep 17 and wrote the music for Spring Awakening (in which Creel played the role of Melchior in their early workshops).

This entire thread is worthwhile reading for any expert who speaks to a news outlet that might employ AI. The risk of having one’s words entirely repackaged will only increase as newsrooms feel the pressure to do more with fewer actual people on the tools.

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

Very displeased to see coach buses shortcutting on my local neighbourhood bikeway on a Saturday afternoon. Are they new here? Do they know or care that this bikeway has roundabouts? At least they’re keeping to the speed limit, which I guess makes them better than 3% of the other traffic.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

My take on the airport thing: the root of the agreement seems to be that the private sector is just better at some things than the public sector. And my personal experience has been: no, not really? You can have good corporate cultures whether you're working for profit or to maximize pubic benefit.

We want money and housing and healthcare, not a shortcut to living the most basic unfulfilled human existence that a coked up programmer can devise. Some of us are happy. Others of us fully imagine that we can become happy. Many of us aren’t afraid of what that costs.
