Infrastructure determines behaviour, making some things easy/natural and others hard/weird. Municipal elections are on now in #bcpoli. Vote for candidates supporting more neighbours & more sociable public spaces. Fewer cars littering streets and more sidewalks, bike lanes, bus bulges and plazas.

My design research workshops are now trauma centers because everyone has been so gd gaslit. It is dehumanizing and abusive to hire someone explicitly for their expertise and ritualistically demean and dismiss it.

It's worth noting that in the olden days (like, 15 years ago) areas like White Rock/South Surrey, the Tri-Cities, or Ridge Meadows had 5-15 reporters solely dedicated to local community news. There was a business model that supported that, and it's a huge issue that no longer exists.

Hey Vancouver friends, PLEASE sign this petition to save the traffic calming that has made my neighbourhood much safer for my kids and everyone else walking and rolling through it. It’s under attack by a vocal minority with the ear of the media and 2 municipal parties (TEAM and ABC, fyi). 1/

And yes, wondering about the ecological footprint. Misinformed policies, missed opportunities and the infrastructure (or lack thereof) to be lighten boating’s impact. Sailboats are almost the equivalent of hybrid vehicles of the water for that matter. The opposite end of the convenience spectrum.

My critiques are rooted in my experiences as a semi-regular passenger on a small 50-year old keelboat, watching my partner engage in and oversee all maintenance and upgrades (plumbing included) and having my capacity to be involved erode fairly rapidly due to health issues.

I am (unfortunately) the perfect audience for this 2-hour video on the effects of cruising, but it was interesting to see comments online that cruises can be accessible getaways for wheelchair users and in some cases more cost effective than assisted care for seniors.

Via Steven Sater’s Instagram, just connecting the dots now between Gavin Creel, the friend whose death Sara Bareilles writes about in Good Grief, and Duncan Sheik, who died on Sep 17 and wrote the music for Spring Awakening (in which Creel played the role of Melchior in their early workshops).

This entire thread is worthwhile reading for any expert who speaks to a news outlet that might employ AI. The risk of having one’s words entirely repackaged will only increase as newsrooms feel the pressure to do more with fewer actual people on the tools.

Watching how the other half lives as a BC Ferries occasional user (but not dependent on it) - referring to the ferry system to the south and over the line from us. Scrolling the rest of the timeline, sounds like a whole lot of affected folks.

I was a little surprised to see a kiosk at Surrey Central selling watch straps. I ordered fancy fabric straps for my Apple Watch online from an operation in East Van last year.

It’s also kind of wild that a 20-person patio equals 1 parked car. Cars are absolute hogs for space. And they’re almost always single-occupant.

…and, tragedy! I tried blind baking pastry in a French white at too low a temp; the pastry completely split (!!!). It did significantly better blind baked in metal on a higher temperature but still leaked large pools of lard during final bake. End result, fortunately, was still delicious.

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

Definitely a flew too close to the sun moment trying to be hoity-toity using grams AND scale up the recipe. My troubleshoot feels solid tho: I tried adding more flour to one disc, cleaved off a small bit from the attempted save and the original, and will bake a small test/see if I need more fixes. 🫠

Oooof, not my finest baking moment. Messed up the math when trying to convert a recipe to grams and got confused with some of my ingredient substitutions so now there is a very good chance my pie crust is completely out of whack on the fat to flour ration. Eeeeeee.

Bought smoked gouda for the first time in a long time. Labeling appropriately. I also now know where within walkable distance the best cheese selection lives. So dangerous!
Cheese wrapped in paper in a plastic bag with a label, white on black: “Hazardous drug. Handle properly.”

Very displeased to see coach buses shortcutting on my local neighbourhood bikeway on a Saturday afternoon. Are they new here? Do they know or care that this bikeway has roundabouts? At least they’re keeping to the speed limit, which I guess makes them better than 3% of the other traffic.

Just combing through search results and saw a couple of recipes on grocery store websites where you make the tourtiere like normal with pie crust on the bottom and put mashed potatoes on top like you would a cottage or shepherd’s pie. Whether to include the potatoes in the fill is my question…

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

IMHO it ultimately comes down to how some process their oppression/their journey out of it. Some people see themselves as having earned the right to dole out charity according to their individual discernment of who is deserving. Others internalize the class and “getting it wrong” matters less.
