Bought smoked gouda for the first time in a long time. Labeling appropriately. I also now know where within walkable distance the best cheese selection lives. So dangerous!

In my defense, this app is for language, not geography. What do I know about Shédiac? I like how low stakes this is compared to the mean green bird app.

What a welcome home. On the one hand, the sunset from above the clouds is stunning. On the other, it took me way, way longer than it should have to realize what I thought was mist catching the light obscuring the view of the Rockies is in fact smoke, and the orange points are active fires.
Sparse clouds over a lake, catching orange light from the setting sun. The view is hazy overall.
Smoke billowing from active fires from overhead. The side of a slope is visible. Sunset from above. Harrison Lake is visible and partially obscured by thick banks of smoke.

My journey with poetry arguably really starts with Lorna Crozier’s “Inventing The Hawk” which was gifted to me by my high school English teacher and I honed my instincts to read poetry recreationally. Didn’t realize she’s island based. This poem is new to me and is …very timely. #sealeychallenge
Title: All the Room You Need

Poem:

Sky: an eye that never blinks
So much pain in me some days
1 bend double under its gaze, each vertebra a stone.
This is what comes of being too much alone.
There's no end
to it here, the sky gives you all the room you need to grow small.

The algo served me this one on one those platforms I can’t quite bring myself to leave… and it feels right. So here is Devin Kelly’s poem “All That Wanting, Right?” As published in HAD 2023, for my second #sealeychallenge contribution.
Image 1: poem titled “All That Wanting, Right?” By Devin Kelly.

Poem text reads:

I wanted a poem to come out of my sadness,
but no poem came. I wanted a revolution to come out of my burnout, but no revolution
came. I wanted a bird to fly through my open
window, but my window was closed. I wanted
sun on an evening when it was already dark.
I wanted just a bit of grief rather than despair.
&, in my shame, I wanted my childhood back.
I wanted to walk backward out of the
room
where I kept my secrets. I wanted to say I'm hurt
before my hurt became a character trait I told
no one but myself. When I wanted unknowing,
I was given certainty, & when I wanted the hard
& fixed line, I was given mystery.Poem continues:

Sometimes,
I wanted to give it all back, but to who, I wondered,
& how? I wanted a life to come out of my life,
but instead I was left with my life. All that wanting,
I think now, & still I woke this morning to light
& the memory of the time a bird did fly through
the open window of my apartment, &, scared
& senseless, shat all over the couch before leaving.
All that wanting, right? Sometimes it happens
& sometimes it doesn't & sometimes it happens
worse. Make do, little friend I call myself.
Walk
backward out of the room you have made out
of your wanting into the room of where you are.
The poem is here. The revolution, too. & love,
still, even in the evening, when light still
shines.

I’m just learning now about the #sealeychallenge! Since I’m travelling for another week and a half, I think I will do sporadic shares from my Instagram story archives and poets I recollect. The first one Dannie Abse’s “Mysteries” - discovered in the stack of prints at London Transport Museum shop.
Print of poster that fits in a London Underground train ad space. Poem reads:

At night, I do not know who I am when I dream, when I am sleeping.

Awakened, I hold my breath and listen:
a thumbnail scratches the other side of the wall.

At midday, I enter a sunlit room to observe the lamplight on for no reason.

I should know by now that few octaves can be heard, that a vision dies from being too long stared at;

that the whole of recorded history even is but a little gossip in a great silence;

that a magnesium flash cannot illumine, for one single moment, the invisible.

I do not complain. I start with the visible and am startled by the visible.

Dannie Abse (b.1932)

A commenter on the Reddit post sharing this Ars Technica item re: latest horrifying case of Grok and CSAM contained very actionable advice for those of us wanting to light a fire under the ass of government bodies/agencies still posting to The Bad Place.
Screenshot of a Reddit post from u/Bardfinn:

“Gonna comment here -

It costs nothing - Free - to go to your city's next City Council meeting and ask them if they have insurance coverage for the public communications employees that have to use X for the city's police, mayor, library, etc accounts, against the very real possibility that they are going to be exposed to this abuse material and violent hate speech while carrying out their jobs.

Don't debate, don't argue, don't let them derail you. Just get it on the record that they've been officially told that their employees are likely to be exposed to this during the course of their employment, simply because their official social media accounts are on X.
Bring them printouts of news articles like this one.
There's a lot more out there explaining that Musk's Al is used to make this material, and about the hate groups using the site.”

As a 1.5 gen immigrant, here now over 30 years - this bad faith practice of politics is the most profound betrayal of the highest teachings of the many people whose generosity and wisdom shaped my and my families’ fortunes and time here. To say I’m disappointed is putting it very mildly.

It is cruel and unusual for the Gubbins makers to give me a sticker for a meme I’m too old and square to use properly! Anyways sorry to anyone who would know exactly what the right thing to do with “pk fire” is, please accept this nautical giggle instead.
A flag says “Just keep swimming” on a dark green background with a hand drawn fur texture. The caption says “maligning seafarers juices these fish pews”. My partner has an annual summer tradition of making turkey, strawberry and brie sandwiches with mint. I may have now unwittingly made a case for doing these sandwiches with rhubarb rye bread from now on! The tanginess is surprisingly pleasant, though it’s definitely more dense than a sourdough.

Adaptations after 4+ days of fog: (1) I mentally refer to visibility in “blocks” and “half blocks”. These are, of course, Vancouver blocks (larger than downtown Portland blocks on both sides) and a horribly inconsistent measure. (2) I watch for perched crows shaking dew off their tail feathers.

The Street and Traffic By-Law is pretty clear: a vehicle is not to be parked within 5m of either side of a crosswalk. Even though a lane intersection does not count as a crosswalk, taller vehicles parked by lanes / alleys affect (speeding) cars’ sightlines into cyclists in the travel lane too. 2/5
Excerpt from the City of Vancouver Street and Traffic Bylaw:
17.4 An owner, registered owner, lessee or operator of a vehicle must not cause, allow or permit that vehicle to stop:
(a) on a crosswalk;
(b) within 6 metres of either side of a crosswalk, except for the driver of a motorcycle or motor assisted cycle who is parking in a clearance parking area or a bicycle rider parking at a bicycle rack;
(c) on a sidewalk;
(D) on a sidewalk crossing;An excerpt from the City of Vancouver Street and Traffic bylaw:

"Crosswalk" means:
(a) the portion of a roadway at an intersection or elsewhere that is marked for signe trian crossing by lines or other markings on the road surface or by a
(b) roadway and the adjacent lateral property line, but does not include lane intersections.

I’m getting fed up and need to vent here. Drivers regularly park their vehicles in my neighbourhood in ways that jeopardize vulnerable road users. Combined with people who routinely shortcut on residential streets while speeding, this is a recipe for tragedy. 1/5

UPDATE: it actually turned out pretty bad. Once the power shut off at 7pm, and there was no fan to move the air around, there was also 8 measly km’s of wind at YVR and my apartment’s temperature dropped ***0.1C*** in 7 hours — until 2am, when 15min of fan time dropped it ***3C***.
An update of the temperature graph in the previous thread. It shows that on the evening of July 13, instead of the pattern shown in previous evenings, the peak temperature plateaus for 7 hours at 29.7C before dropping rapidly back down to 26 and resuming the pattern to the lowest temperature of the day around 8am.
