Data centers are catastrophically unpopular, adoption is not where they need it to be, their public figures are obvious sociopaths, and folks they hoped to have in their corner (like mathematicians) are pushing back. If a slowdown seems inevitable, their only move is to try and take credit for it.

Mathematician Karen Keskulla Uhlenbeck was born #OTD in 1942. She is known for her work on PDEs, calculus of variations, topology, and gauge theory, and was the second woman (after Emmy Noether!) to give the plenary lecture to the International Congress of Mathematicians. 👩‍🔬 🧪
A black and white photo of mathematician Karen Uhlenbeck. She is in her 20s or 30s in this photo, wearing a short skirt with a checker pattern, a dark blouse or shirt, a cardigan (or perhaps a light sweatshirt), and sandals. Her hair is dark and a bit longer than shoulder-length. The photo was taken outside and she is standing in the grass. There is a building and sidewalk behind her.

Paul Dirac (1902, discovered the relativistic equation for fermion wave functions), Ernest Lawrence (1901, invented the cyclotron), and Roger Penrose (1931, developed global view of spacetime and much of what we know about spacetime singularities) were all born #OTD. Pretty good day for physics. 🧪 ⚛️
A black and white photo of Paul Dirac in his early 20s. He is looking directly at the camera, and while not smiling he does look pleased. Dirac is wearing a dark jacket and white collared shirt. His tie sports a stairstep strip pattern. Dirac has a thin mustache.A black and white photo of Ernest Lawrence working on part of his cyclotron. Despite working in the lab he is wearing a pinstripe suit with a double-breasted jacket -- a very formal affair by today's standards, totally lab-to-evening wear. There is a white handkerchief in the breast pocket of his jacket. Lawrence his looking away from the camera, at the apparatus that he is working on. He is wearing glasses and his hair is slicked back. The apparatus appears to be two large cylinders (probably supporting magnets) with machinery situated between them.A color photo of Roger Penrose, presumably from the late 60s or early 70s based on the butterfly collar of his light green shirt. He is also wearing a dark sport coat. His head is tilted slightly, looking at the camera. There are sun-dappled tree branches and foliage in the background.

Astronomer Vera Rubin was born #OTD in 1928. Her work on galactic rotation curves became one of the main pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter and she deserved a Nobel Prize for it. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ 👩‍🔬 Image: Vassar College / Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
Black and white photo of a young Vera Rubin – likely in her teens or twenties – looking through the eyepiece of a long telescope. She wears a blouse or dress with short sleeves and a grid print.
