This is such a lovely piece about a woman who wrote an incredible book about American women. It completely shifted my understanding of power in early America.

We're not sure there's a better profession to ask hyper-specific, niche questions of tbh
Why are such hyper-specific, niche interest questions being asked on a Historians subreddit?

Like, sorry if this goes against the rules here, but some of the questions that get asked are just mind boggling in their specificity. Who can even answer this?

I came across this beautiful (and timely) Maxine Greene quote in Kathy Schultz and Rachel Throop's new book, PRACTICE: KEY WORDS IN TEACHER EDUCATION. "What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times?..." Teaching is, in the end, a profession of hope. #EduSky
What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times? It is a matter of awakening and empowering today's young people to name, to reflect, to imagine, and to act with more and more concrete responsibility in an increasingly multifarious world. At once, it is a matter of enabling them to remain in touch with dread and desire, with the smell of lilacs and the taste of a peach. The light may be uncertain and flickering; but teachers in their lives and works have the remarkable capacity to make it shine in all sorts of corners and, perhaps, to move newcomers to join with others and transform."

Tomorrow, it's my honor to deliver the Shannon K. Murray Lecture on Hope and the Academy at the Univ. of Prince Edward Island. I'm honored to be invited, and hope I can rise to the level of the amazing scholar-speakers who've given the Murray Lecture. A sneak preview of the foolishness:
A slide with a black background and neon-colored speedometer-type gauge in the left-hand side of the picture. The needle is in the read, and the label reads "performance." The caption, however, reads "I do not wish to be optimized."A slide, the background of which is a gray brick sidewalk, with a bright yellow flower or weed (or both?) growing through a crack between bricks. The caption says {"radical hope")A picture of the activist, teacher, and scholar Angela Davis with her quote: if, indeed, we wish to be radical in our quest for change—then we must get to the root of our oppression. After all, radical simply means “grasping things at the root.Count von Count from Sesame Street.

I'm struck by 2 things re: this essay: 1. It's a reminder that being a politically progressive advocate for public schools means that sometimes you're on the same page as a conservative 2. He wrote this for the New York Post. The change to his writing style is wild. www.aei.org/commentary/h...
Members decided that with the class of 2028, New York’s students will no longer have to pass Regents exams to receive a high-school diploma.

The exams themselves will remain, but the state will sever the link between passing them and graduating — the very thing that gave the Regents exams their meaning and consequence for generations.

Regent Felicia Thomas-Williams captured the philosophical change: “You don’t assess a fish on climbing a tree because fish can’t climb trees,” she said.

Children aren’t fish, and reading isn’t tree-climbing.

It has been 25 years since I graduated high school, and I’ve spent each of those years either: • training to become a teacher • teaching in public schools • working toward advanced degrees in education • combo of the above At no point did the US government think education was great.

I have also seen a LOT of nostalgia, like ridiculous amounts of nostalgia for hip-hop and R&B of the past, especially riding on that wave of 2016 nostalgia. Can a genre get lost creatively because its fans are too nostalgic?

What's most remarkable about this documentary is they start with this (not accurate) claim and end with a vignette on how it's great that a student's HS experience had one main goal: getting him ready to work in a welding shop.

Whenever I am in an enclosed space with a crying baby, I find it helps to remind myself that I'm supposed to find a baby's cry impossible to ignore because that's how we've evolved as humans. I take deep breaths and remember that that baby (and their caregiver/s) is having a much worse time than me.
