In this same vein, there are scholars who have argued that one of the contributing factors to women leaving the classroom upon getting married in the 1800 was that they were no longer pure enough. It wasn't just the idea they couldn't teach and wife or that their husband could support her.

The central point of this thread is one of the many reasons I'm so adamant against the "factory model" myth. People use the myth to advocate for change blow past the actual reasons public education was started in this country and end up advocating for workplace training as good for students.

The cost of districts in designing in-house exams with the level of quality control that the Regents have is EXORBITANT. Even if only NYC did it, it would be wild. (When NYS got rid the of LOTE Regents, test design consortiums popped up across the state. Lots of PD hours and $$ went into design.)

I came across this beautiful (and timely) Maxine Greene quote in Kathy Schultz and Rachel Throop's new book, PRACTICE: KEY WORDS IN TEACHER EDUCATION. "What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times?..." Teaching is, in the end, a profession of hope. #EduSky
What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times? It is a matter of awakening and empowering today's young people to name, to reflect, to imagine, and to act with more and more concrete responsibility in an increasingly multifarious world. At once, it is a matter of enabling them to remain in touch with dread and desire, with the smell of lilacs and the taste of a peach. The light may be uncertain and flickering; but teachers in their lives and works have the remarkable capacity to make it shine in all sorts of corners and, perhaps, to move newcomers to join with others and transform."

Like, sorry if this goes against the rules here, but some of the questions that get asked are just mind boggling in their specificity. Who can even answer this?

I'm struck by 2 things re: this essay: 1. It's a reminder that being a politically progressive advocate for public schools means that sometimes you're on the same page as a conservative 2. He wrote this for the New York Post. The change to his writing style is wild. www.aei.org/commentary/h...
Members decided that with the class of 2028, New York’s students will no longer have to pass Regents exams to receive a high-school diploma.

The exams themselves will remain, but the state will sever the link between passing them and graduating — the very thing that gave the Regents exams their meaning and consequence for generations.

Regent Felicia Thomas-Williams captured the philosophical change: “You don’t assess a fish on climbing a tree because fish can’t climb trees,” she said.

Children aren’t fish, and reading isn’t tree-climbing.

This is a petition to change the BHS Al policy from this, which was copy & pasted directly from the student Handbook google document on Monday, September 21st of 2026.
BHS Al Policy
Unauthorized use of generative Al tools to substantially complete an assignment is not permitted.
This petition to change the Al policy would like to change the following:
• Remove the word substantially from the policy all together
a. The usage of the word substantially is ambiguous at best, and disingenuous at worst. For example, who is it that decides when Al was used substantially, who decides what substantially means, and why is any amount permitted
when the use itself is unauthorized?
Require a more descriptive decision on how Al is and is not permitted in assignments and projects
a. If students do not know what is permitted, how do they know what is not
b. If Al is used in 100% of the creation process except for editing, would that count as substantial usage? Most would probably argue yes, but it is possible for an argument to be posed of the opposite, that the baseline was made with Al but the final product was made by humans. That argument could be made,
and could be accepted., even if it goes against what the policy means.
c. If Al is used for the basis of the brainstorming of talking points, but nothing
else, would that count as substantial usage? Most would probably argue no,but again, it is possible to argue the opposite. It could be argued that because the baseline of the passage was Al generated, everything else built on that foundation does not count as real work.
Have a more active description of why Al is prohibited
a. Why is Al prohibited? Is it because you just don't like it? Is it because it harms the environment? Is it because it harms the learning capabilities of people no matter the age or gender? Specifics are important.
• Expand restrictions on Al and what possible punishments might be
a. What happens when you break the rules? Nothing? Suspension? A grade drop? Or should it be decided by the teacher?
b. What specifically is not permitted when using Al? Is image generation allowed? Probably not in art. Is source generation allowed? Who knows, not
us.
c. Are teachers allowed to use Al? Why or why not? It sends mixed messages when teachers use Al in their classroom slides and then turn around and say
"No! This technology is really bad and horrible and don't use it?"
• Require a more expansive curriculum on Al and its problems
a. Anything would be helpful. Even an assembly would be helpful because people do not know anything about what Al does to them, or the environment. This is a BARE MINIMUM.
Each request will be signed on individually in this petition. Each change would be requested individually and discussed with those who have the power to change it individually.

#PairedTexts 1. "Can we still govern?" donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-system... 2. Rick Hess "In Search of Common Sense" (Note: the article linked to "Democrats" goes to an article from the NEA.)
Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff. Take the debate over dismantling the Department of Education. It often devolves into aggressively dumb arguments that are more symbolic than substantive. Democrats bizarrely insist that shuttering a building with 4,000 bureaucrats will devastate student achievement and well-being, while Republicans bizarrely promise that doing so (while barely touching the Congressionally funded programs) will radically shrink the federal role and turbocharge learning.
