I think people like to see joyfulness and friendliness from political leaders instead of just dour seriousness all the time. Not much of that in Colorado politics (either party). Hick used to have it. Cory Gardner had it. Mike Johnston is probably the best version of it now.

Trump’s superpower has always been that he radiates an anti-gravitas field, such that anything he touches becomes seen as fundamentally unserious. This has allowed Trump to pursue wars, tyranny, and corruption of immense gravity, while everyone tries to avoid looking like they care too much.

Yes, this is by far the biggest weapon that a new Democratic majority will have; full subpoena and contempt power and multiple members that are extremely eager to hold the admin's feet to the fire. The biggest issue re: immigration is that there's SO MUCH else going on for Congress to investigate.

The Trump administration claims the constitution is "colorblind" so there is no reason to ask about race. But thats not true! There are multiple places the constitution focuses on race that help to explain why it became a part of every set of Census questions donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-2030-c...
The first was the language in the Constitution to separate “free persons” from “other persons,” the euphemism used in Article 1 for enslaved persons. The first census statute translated “free persons” to “whites” and “other free persons” for the actual census form, and by the 1820 census Congress had added age and sex categories to distinguish the “free colored” population and the enslaved population (presumed to be “colored”).

The second was the mandate to exclude “Indians not taxed” from the “actual enumeration,” such that American population history has had to reconstruct the demography of the indigenous population from non census sources from 1790 to 1890, when the Census Office did begin to conduct censuses of the “Indian population.”

Similarly, people keep asking me if immigration will get much better if Democrats retake Congress and the answer is "probably not." ICE is largely insulated from Congressional pushback (the 2026 budget reconciliation bill funded them through 2029) and hearings and subpoenas can only do so much.

Renee Good's family files two lawsuits

The family of Renee Good, the Minneapolis woman who was fatally shot by a federal immigration enforcement agent near her home in January, filed two federal lawsuits Thursday alleging wrongful death, among other contentions.

The suits names as defendants Jonathan Ross, the agent who killed Good as she sat in her SUV on Portland Avenue, numerous other federal agents and various current and former Trump administration officials.

“Renee’s death was not an accident,” read a news release from Chicago-based Romanucci & Blandin, the law firm representing Good’s family members. “It was the predictable result of a coordinated campaign by senior officials in this administration to target Minnesotans of Somali or Hispanic origin and silence anyone who dared to raise their voice in protest.

“Operation Metro Surge was built on exaggerated fraud accusations that the White House embraced as a pretext for thousands of masked, unidentified federal agents to rove neighborhoods and stop people based on how they looked. Administration officials told agents to force confrontations with observers like Renee and led agents to believe they would face no consequences for using force.”Paul Walsh
This is what the lawsuit alleges

The suit’s allegations include the actions of ICE agent Jonathan Ross and Renee Good in the moments leading up to and including the shooting:

Good was unarmed, was suspected of no crime, and was not the subject of any law enforcement investigation.
Her stopped vehicle had not prevented traffic (including Ross’s own vehicle) from proceeding.
She had spoken to Ross moments earlier in calm and conciliatory terms.
She had turned her wheels away from Ross and was driving slowly away from him and the other agents.
Ross had moved his legs and body out of the vehicle’s path, and was out of its path, before he fired and then leaned toward the vehicle to improve his shooting position.
No person was in the path of the vehicle, and the second and third shots, including the fatal shot to Good’s left temple, were fired through the open driver’s side window from the side of the vehicle as it moved away.
