The thing about Ben Collins is that he clearly views himself as a political actor. He came out of political journalism, he has no relevant comedy experience, his partner also came out of political journalism and ran for Congress. So we should view his actions primarily through a political lens.

Also, even if people weren't willing to forgive you for whatever you said that pissed them off that day, roughly 99 times out of 100 it would blow over within a day or two as they moved on to the next outrage. Being burned to death at the stake didn't heal quite so quickly.
