Public executions were not abolished out of tenderness towards the criminal. They were abolished because of the effect on the people watching, and the dangers of making human death a source of commercial entertainment. Here's Charles Dickens in The Times, after witnessing an execution in 1849.
"I have seen, habitually, some of the worst sources of general contamination and corruption in this country, and I think there are not many phases of London life that could surprise me. I am solemnly convinced that nothing that ingenuity could devise to be done in this city, in the same compass of time, could work such ruin as one public execution, and I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits. I do not believe that any community can prosper where such a scene of horror and demoralization as was enacted this morning outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol is presented at the very doors of good citizens, and is passed by, unknown or forgotten. And when in our prayers and thanksgivings for the season we are humbly expressing before God our desire to remove the moral evils of the land, I would ask your readers to consider whether it is not a time to think of this one, and to root it out.

I am, Sir, your faithful Servant.
Charles Dickens".

A cop warns on the price of witnessing death.
As a homicide detective, I can say with all of my being that there is no lesson learned in seeing someone die. But there is a price. And that price is your peace. Your decency. And the soul of our society.
We don't have to be this way, this fake tough but real ugly way. Stop

I thought I had seen it all, but this is an astonishing new low, putting the US in the company of Iran, Afghanistan and N Korea. I abhor the death penalty. The idea that kids, including my own, might see such an execution shocks me to the core. Abhorrent, barbaric, sick, warped, cruel and twisted.

There’s a grim irony in the fact that the poster that sealed Melekhin’s fate included the words, "All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." He was referring to Putin’s Russia. He could have been referring to, you know.

For years, we've rightly focused on the military and political threat posed by Putin's Russia. But there's another cost that receives far less attention. A hidden cost paid by British taxpayers, businesses and public services. It's called the Putin Tax. 🧵

People keep attributing the quote “With great power comes great responsibility” to Spider-Man. It comes from the British statesman William Lamb, in 1817, and later Winston Churchill made a similar remark in 1906.

To keep things in perspectiv: The city of Hamburg alone has 1.8 million inhabitants (vs. Meck-Pomm’s 1.5 million). Another point for non-German observers to consider: AfD won’t be able to form a government with this result, as no other party besides the small BSW would form a coalition with them.
