Hours before Kristi Noem left her job as DHS secretary, her agency bought five planes from a donor at a huge markup. They were supposed to fly deportees but have sat idle. Another symbol of waste and fraud under Trump. Gift link. 👇 www.nytimes.com/2026/10/04/u...

Learning that Canada is spending $2.6B on 12 rocket launchers. Worth noting that this exceeds Canada’s Health Research budget ($1.4B) in 25/26 (which is largely stagnant). 12 rocket launchers get almost double than life changing research. 🤯
Screenshot form the Toronto Star that says:

“That doesn't mean the door is closed on procuring military hardware from the U.S., he added, noting recent decisions to buy more than a dozen HIMARS artillery systems from U.S. company Lockheed Martin for $2.6 billion, and up to 16 P-8 Poseidon "multi-mission" planes from American firm Boeing for more than $5 billion.”

It is naive to think that things deposited on preprint servers are not fully and immediately available to download and evaluate whether you want this or not Also naive to think this will not affect reviewers or editors of journals, who for all we know may already be using this to triage submissions

"I have enough money to do research," says Shu, laughing. Meanwhile HHS shut off the NIH grant that funded related work on gene therapy for deafness at Harvard Medical School, because “woke” or something like that Shu trained in the very same lab that HHS defunded
Getting results in Shanghai

In China, it's a different story.

"I have enough money to do research," says Shu, laughing.

China is pouring huge resources into developing all sorts of biological research, including gene therapy, aiming to curb its reliance on the West and become an even bigger world superpower. This spring, the country pledged billions in additional science funding. Shu, who trained at Harvard Medical School and is working on solving the same problems as David Corey, has plenty of staff in his lab, all the supplies he needs and can just get more done. "My lab is growing bigger and bigger," he says. And it's far bigger than his lab when he was in Boston, training under Corey and his mentees.

For decades, the U.S. has brought the smartest people in the world — like Yilai Shu — to its shores. Many have stayed. Shu wanted to, but family and a scientific opportunity, with lots of funding, drew him back home. That decision was rewarded when his team had a successful trial on a single injection that can restore hearing.
