My son, wearing a dark hoodie and khaki pants, leans forward to look closely inside a large, moss-covered piece of the Peter Iredale shipwreck. The weathered metal structure is heavily rusted and covered in green moss and barnacles on its lower half. In the background, the skeletal, rusted remains of the ship stick out of the sand and shallow water along the shoreline under an overcast, gray sky. The tide appears to be low, exposing more of the wreckage on the wide, flat beach.

About the wreck:
On October 25, 1906, the ship was bound for Portland, Oregon, from Liverpool via the mouth of the Columbia River. Due to heavy fog, a sudden wind shift, and strong currents, the vessel was driven ashore on Clatsop Spit near Fort Stevens State Park. High winds and strong surf pushed the ship further into the sand. All 25 crew members and two passengers were safely evacuated. While the ship was not initially heavily damaged, subsequent attempts to tow it back to sea failed. The ship was declared a total loss and sold for scrap. What could not be removed was left behind. Over a century later, its rusted, moss-covered iron skeleton remains a historic landmark on the Oregon coast.
